KENSINGTON, Md., Jan. 30 -- About 100 runners toed the starting line of the rescheduled Al Lewis 10-mile run staged primarily on the Rock Creek Trail in Montgomery County.

By the time the leaders hit the 1.5-mile mark, a light snow began falling and when the first runner passed the water stop at 4.25 miles, the snow started to cover lawns, cars and roads.

The event, coordinated by race director Aaron Cheskis and the DC Road Runners, started and finished at Ken-Gar Palisades Park.

REGISTER NOW FOR APRIL 24 AUDUBON RUN/WALK EVENT
TSR Featured Event

The Potomac Valley Audubon Society is now accepting registrations for its ninth annual "This Race is for the Birds!" run/walk event, which will be held on Saturday, April 24 on the campus of the National Conservation Training Center near Shepherdstown.
The Society is expanding the event significantly this year. In past years, it was mainly focused on a simple 5K run. This year, it will feature two professionally timed races—one 4.9 miles long and another 7.7 miles long.

In the past, between 75 and 125 runners have turned out for the 5K race. With the new expanded format, the organization is expecting 250 to 300 runners to compete this year.

Registration for the two professionally timed races will be capped at 300 for both.

There will also be a self-timed 2-mile community jog/walk for families and those who prefer a slower pace, and a 1-mile "Fun Run" for children under 10 years of age.

The 4.9- and 7.7-mile races will follow trails that wind through the forests and fields of the 538-acre NCTC campus.
The 2-mile jog/walk will follow a course that will be very user-friendly for families with small children, and trail-friendly baby joggers will be appropriate and encouraged. . Read More

American Odyssey Relay set for April 23-24 start in Gettysburg, Pa.

FREDERICK, Md., Feb. 20 – During the inaugural American Odyssey Relay last April, each team of 12 runners experienced the highs and lows – literally – of just how fickle regional weather can be at that time of year.

Early the first day, it was 44 degrees at 7 a.m. at the starting line in Gettysburg, Pa., and over the next 12 hours or so, temperatures ranged between a high of a comfortable 68 to an overnight low of 58.

Then came Saturday morning. Then the blazing hot sun of the afternoon – and a high of 94 degrees.

“People were jumping into the C&O Canal,” said race director Bob Fleshner on Saturday during a 90-minute American Odyssey Relay rally at If The Shoe Fits shoe shop in Frederick. Runners came from Cumberland, Chambersburg, Hagerstown, Frederick and Damascus to hear Fleshner and have their questions answered. “It was the warmest day (of 2009) until July 26.” Read More

Run for the Plunge 15K winners: Dennis Mickey and Jen Sober
5K winners: Ian MacFawn and Becky Gallagher

FLINTSTONE, Md., March 6 -- Just two feet shy of 200 runners participated in the second Run for the Plunge 15K and 5K runs on Saturday at Rocky Gap State Park.

Forty-five-year-old Dennis Mickey covered the 9.3-mile run, including a challenging, ice- and snow-filled 0.6-mile trail section, better than anybody else. The Ridgeley, W.Va., resident won with a time of 61 minutes and 9 seconds.

Jennifer Sober, 36, of McHenry, cruised to the women's title.

In the 5K run, Allegany High School harrier Ian MacFawn outpaced last year's champ, Tom Ruckert, 57, of Grantsville. Becky Gallagher, 36, earned the top spot among all female finishers.

Both running events, sponsored by Cumberland native David Mantheiy and his Pittsburgh-based construction company, Manheim Corporation, were staged in conjunction with the sixth annual Hooley Plunge - the annual dip into Lake Habeeb to raise money for Allegany County Specials Olympics and other programs that aid the developmentally disabled. Proceeds from the runs are contributed to the same cause.

Nearly 30 volunteers through the Volunteer Team at Rocky Gap State Park provided support along the course, as did Allegany County Bureau of Police, the Maryland Natural Resources Police, park rangers and a handful of dedicated individuals, including Dave Treber, Della Cook, Rhonda Johnson and Marvin Bridges.

COLUMBIA, Md., Feb. 28 – The Westminster Road Runners Club surprised everyone – including its own members – in 2009 when its representatives won the RRCA Club Challenge 10-mile women’s team title.

Jim Adams and Falls Road Running made sure history wasn’t going to repeat itself.

At a post-race meeting of RRCA member presidents, Adams said he recruited young. The strategy paid dividends for Falls Road Running, which swept the men’s, women’s and co-ed titles on Sunday at Howard Community College.

Falls Road Running won the co-ed title in 2009 but finished second in the other two categories.

Shortly after Sunday’s whistle, however, it was clear the race was Falls Road Running’s to lose – at least on an individual basis. Susie Emond, 26, of Baltimore, pushed to an early lead and never had a reason to worry about the competition.
Emond was the first female to cross the line, stopping the clock in 59 minutes, 27.14 seconds – nearly four full minutes of the No. 2 finisher. Teammate Melissa Majumdar, 25, of Baltimore, was second in 63:24 while Laura O’Hara, 29, of Alexandria, Va., took third in 63:34.35. O’Hara won last year’s individual title with a mark of 61:15.3 and led the Westminster Road Runners Club to its first-ever team championship after entering the event considered by many as a perennial doormat.
