SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. – Even Scott Biola did a double take.
The veteran Jefferson cross country coach was surprised to see that his Cougars boys team had tallied a perfect score of 15 points on Saturday while hosting the Jefferson Invitational at Sam Michaels Park.
Biola approached the event timer and asked about two runners that, at quick glance, appeared to break the possibility of perfection. But Washington junior Josh Davis, who finished fourth overall, competed for a team several runners short of a full squad. And Martinsburg senior Khiry Timbers placed one spot – and 11.4 seconds – too late to halt the early season victory for the Jefferson boys, separated from their nearest competitor by more than 50 points.
Brandon Doughty, meanwhile, made a statement in being an ideal replacement for the 2008-09 graduate Cory Hampshire. As a junior in 2007, Hampshire covered the course in 17 minutes, 11.8 seconds (and was second overall). Doughty went faster and placed higher than his former senior teammate did in his junior year. (Incidentally, Hampshire went on to place 11th in the Class AAA state championship that October in 17:08. Doughty, as a freshman, placed 10th in 17:07).
On Saturday, the third-year high school athlete cruised to the individual title in 16:50.3, a mark Hampshire didn’t reach until later that year. And Biola said Doughty’s performance was stellar despite recovering from a lingering illness.
But Doughty’s effort was almost overwhelmed by his teammates’ collective finish. Sophomore Sam Munnis was second in 17:42.7, senior Cody Marsh was third in 17:45.7, junior Jimmy Munnis placed fifth in 18:24.5 and sophomore Eric Graf, who finished off the Cougars’ scoring five, was sixth overall in 18:31.
Martinsburg was second in the team standings with 68 points and Hedgesville was third with 86 points.
Jefferson’s girls team was nearly as impressive – and perhaps even more so against what arguably was a more competitive field on the 130-acre campus. Senior Alyssa Boucher won the overall title in 19:43.7 – more than a minute ahead of her runner-up finish from 2008.
Fellow senior Andrea Nickerson, whose absence from last year’s invite helped to propel Hampshire to the 2008 girls team title, rebounded with dominance this year. Nickerson’s time of 20:15.9 easily outdistanced third-place finisher Brittany Pollard of Hedgesville (20:46.2).
Lindsey Hash (21:11.2) and Desiree McCarroll (21:39.5) took fourth and fifth, respectively, while junior Caitlin Roll was the Cougars’ fifth runner to place in the top nine overall with a time of 24:00.8.
Only Washington sophomore Vivian Ruiz (sixth, 22:26.9) and the Martinsburg duet of senior Marie Myers (seventh, 23:41.9) and senior Karena Moran (eighth, 23:42.6) helped break up the Jefferson girls’ own attempt at perfection.
The Cougars recovered from last year’s second-place finish to win the team title with 21 points. Martinsburg was second with 61 points while Hedgesville took third with 68 points. Washington’s squad ran incomplete.
