CLEAR SPRING -- If it ain't broke, don't bother fixin' it, or so a version of the old sayin' goes.

And there's absolutely nothing wrong with Rebekah McBride.

McBride, West Virginia's Class A-AA state champion last fall, led wire-to-wire in the small school division of the Interstate Classic cross country gala on Saturday at Clear Spring High School. She covered the 5K (3.1-mile) course - part grass, part gravel road and part trail - in 19 minutes, 58.6 seconds. Berkeley Springs sophomore Macy Houch was second in 20:43.1 and Frankfort freshman Katie Jan was third in 20:43.9.

Coach Amanda Moreland said she realized McBride didn't need to validate the state championship by winning every race this fall. But it's not a strategy Moreland said she's going to mess with. McBride, for her part, said she knows all eyes are on her - and she's reveling in the moment.

Apart from individiual accolades, McBride just might have company this fall on the medal stand in the season's closing, more important competitions. Jan is relatively new to the sport.

"She's going to learn something from every race this year," Moreland said, noting Jan learned from this year's first meet that going out too fast was counterproductive.

Jan seemed to repeat that mistake in the early goings of Saturday's race, pushing through the first mile with the top four competitors. But she held her own this time around.

Winters Mill won the battle of team titles with 69 points, edging Berkeley Springs by a single point. The Falcons were led by sophomore Hannah Oneda, a soccer transplant who ran track this past spring, WM coach Kelly Gruber said.

It seems cross country might be the right sport for her. She averaged 7:01 per mile to place fifth overall and outdistanced Lane Hahn, her closest teammate, by 50 seconds.

Smithsburg was third in the team standings with 76 points. The Leopards used pack running in the best way possible and placed its top five runners in spots 12 through 19 - a spread of 57.6 seconds.

Wilson tops field at Interstate Classic
Creese, Glenelg take home team trophy

CLEAR SPRING -- Smithsburg harrier David Wilson is the young man to beat.

He knows it. And after Saturday's Interstate Classic performance at Clear Spring High School, so does everybody else.

The senior Leopard covered the 5K (3.1-mile) cross country course of mostly grass and trail, with a bit of gravel road, in meet-best 15 minutes, 46.8 seconds to easily out stake his claim as the Maryland Class 1A title favorite.

Wilson was second in last year's state meet at Hereford High School, runner-up to then-senior Jake Zamostny of South Carroll, who has since graduated. Also walking across the stage last spring was  Williamsport's 1-2 punch of Michael Lilley and Naseem Haje, third and fourth, respectively, on the championship course.

"Why is he still running," asked a 7-year-old spectator while pointing at Wilson, who had finished his race several minutes earlier and, unbeknownst to the little girl, was beginning his cooldown.

"Because that's what good runners do," offered her father as a simple explanation. "They run."

Wilson's pace of 5:16 per mile was 11 seconds - per mile - better than No. 2 finisher Robby Creese, of Glenelg. The sophomore finished in 16:19.7 and led the Gladiators to the team title with 53 points. Winters Mill was second with 72 points and Berkeley Springs claimed third place with 90 points.

Individually, Winters M ill junior Ryan Spangler was third in 16:40.6, followed by Land School senior Jack Strebo (16:48.3) and Winters Mill senior Tom Carpenter (16:52.2). North Caroll senior Jesse Albright (seventh, 16:58.3) was the only other runner to crack the 17-minute barrier..

Smithsburg’s Wilson starts XC season quickly
By ANDREW MASON

CLEAR SPRING — The gun fired, and David Wilson’s senior cross country season got off to a smoking start Saturday morning at Clear Spring’s Interstate Classic.

The Smithsburg runner pulled away from Glenelg’s Robby Creese in the second half of the boys small-school race to capture the title. Wilson covered the 3 miles in a course-record time of 15 minutes, 46.8 seconds. The previous record was 15:51, set by Jefferson’s Cory Hampshire in 2007.

Creese, the Maryland Class 1A state champ at 1,600 meters last spring, ended up finishing a distant second Saturday in 16:19.7.

“I wish we could have run with the big schools,” Wilson said, “because with more competition, it could have been faster.”

Urbana’s Jimmy Miller held off Mount Hebron’s Constantine Matsakis by 3 seconds to win the boys large-school race in 16:04.4.

The day clearly belonged to Wilson.

“He was hoping for the course record, but he wasn’t going to kill himself to get it,” Smithsburg coach Ray Shriver said. “The way he’s working, he’s expecting more. We’re happy, but we’re looking ahead.” Read More
