GAR to decide Maryland’s 15K title

CUMBERLAND — The 28th annual Great Allegany Run will send runners downhill from Mount Savage to Cumberland on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 8 a.m. This year, the Road Runners Club of America has again designated the GAR as the Maryland State 15K Championship.

The “GAR” has featured some great duels over the years. This year the 15K women’s race is shaping up to be a duel between Howard County’s Stefanie Commins and two-time defending champion Jen Sober.

Sober, of Deep Creek Lake, is having a terrific year of winning in such local events as the Rocky Gap Triathlon, Great Escape, and Lisa Wade 5K, as well as others, including a close second at the Mountain Maryland Half-Marathon.

While at UMBC Commins competed with the cross country and track teams all four years, racing the 3k, 5k, 6k, and 10k. She now runs for the Howard County Striders.

“The fact that the GAR is again the Maryland Road Runners Club of America 15K State Championship helps bring out some of the top talent,” Race Director Dave Treber said.

“This is a race for everyone. We’ll have all paces and there is a 15K for those who want a longer challenge and a 5K or a two-mile walk. If you don’t want to run, we’ve got spots along the course where we could use volunteers to cheer the runners on while making sure there is information for motorists and course visibility.”

The Great Allegany Run is comprised of four different individual events: a 15 kilometer run, a 5K run, a two-mile Fitness Walk, (all starting at 8 a.m.) and a Kid's Run right after the 15K finishes.

The keystone of the GAR is the 15K race that begins in Mt. Savage and ends on the Downtown Cumberland Mall. The USATF-certified course has gained a reputation of being a very fast course and traditionally draws some of the best men and women runners in the region. Awards will also be presented in five-year increment age groups, custom-made by Arts-n-Letters. Many companies have generously offered prizes for random drawings, such as free month’s membership at RetroFit Wellness Center and Curves for Women, massage sessions at Around the Back, and even coupons from Queen City Creamery and Chick Fil’A.

The 5K race, also USA Track and Field certified, will begin and end in Downtown Cumberland and will be run mostly on the last portion of the 15K course. The 5K race is designed to appeal to both competitive and fitness-oriented runners. Awards will be presented to the top three overall men and women winners and to the top finishers in 10-year increment age groups.

The 2-mile Fitness Walk is designed for walking enthusiasts of all ages and abilities. The walk will showcase the Great Allegheny Passage and is for participation more than an emphasis as a competitive event.

Anyone wishing to enter the GAR may do so by obtaining a registration form from Personal Best Athletics or the YMCA or by going on-line to www.qcstriders.org. A registration fee applies to all events except the Kid's Run. All participants will receive a T-shirt designed by Arts-n-Letters and have a continental breakfast by M&M Bakery and Café Mark after the run. Late registration and race packet pickup will be conducted at the Holiday Inn on Friday evening, Aug 2, from 5 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday morning, Oct. 3, from 6 to 7:15 a.m.
