GRANTSVILLE, Md., Aug. 1 – Jaron Hawkins is mixing up this summer’s racing schedule a bit as he prepares for the Chicago Marathon in October. That race will be his best chance yet to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Marathon Trials.

But the 26-year-old Frostburg resident just couldn’t let the Moonshine Classic 10K at Big Run State Park pass without his participation. On Saturday, Hawkins won his fourth straight 6.2-mile title and sixth in seven tries since 2001, dominating from start to finish. Hawkins posted a time of 32 minutes and 52 seconds, only the third-best time of his six victories.

Dennis Mickey, 44, of Ridgely, W.Va., took second and the men’s masters title with a time of 36:48. Protégé Woody Snoberger, 24, also of Ridgeley, took third in 37:26.

Incoming Allegany High School junior Ian MacFawn, 16, of LaVale, and visiting Bradley Paye, 35, of Houston, Texas, were the only other runners to crack the 38-minute barrier. MacFawn was fourth overall in 37:51, edging Paye by seven seconds.

In his six wins, Hawkins has averaged a gap of more than 2 minutes and 19 seconds between himself and the second place runner. His closest competition came in 2003, when he recorded just his second victory (and, at 35 minutes even, his slowest time).

Jen Sober cruised to her second straight Moonshine Class win. Sober, 36, of McHenry, stopped the clock in 41:24 and easily outdistanced runner-up Anne Patron, 20, of Cockeysville, by 94 seconds. Patron was 22nd overall – to Sober’s 17th place finish in the 96-runner field – in 42:58. Sober’s time was 30 seconds faster than last year’s effort.

Amy Rowan, 2007 winner of the race, placed third overall this year in 43:10. Rowan held off Julie Gessler, 16, of Ellicott City, Md., who finished fourth in 43:13. Only three other women finished under the 45-minute mark, including: Larissa Graudins, 29, of Bridgeville, Pa. (43:19); Christina Aumand, 21, Chesapeake Beach, Md. (43:32); and inaugural Mountain Maryland Marathon champion Kimberly Vest, 30, Frostburg (44:37).

Cumberland resident Paula Bridges, 43, won the women’s masters title in 48:49.
