BOWLING GREEN – What economic crisis?
The 3rd annual Strides for Health and Fitness 5K run grew by nearly 20 percent from last year’s field as 111 runners completed the out-and-back 3.1-mile course on Saturday south of Cumberland. Race director Crystal Yoder said she was pleased with the turnout. And why wouldn’t she be?
The influx of runners, along with a handful of walkers and some dozen kids run participants, helped race sponsor Progressive Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine Clinic support two $1,000 scholarships to Allegany College of Maryland for an aspiring physical therapist assistant and certified occupational therapist assistant.
The race has just 68 5K finishers last year and only 21 in 2007, its first year.
Cumberland resident Amy Rowan, 29, has completed her educational training but is still eager to compete among the best on the road racing circuit. Admittedly frustrated by recent performances, Saturday’s 70-degree temperature at starting time certainly didn’t hurt her chances.
Rowan finished in 20 minutes flat, a barrier she’s been trying to shatter. Still, she was well ahead of runner-up Paula Bridges, 43, of Cumberland (22:13), who garnered the women’s masters title while 16-year-old Blayke Hall, of Moorefield, W.Va., placed third in 22:14.
The men’s race was similarly competitive after Dan DeWitt, 21, of Frostburg, took the top spot in 16:14. Dennis Mickey, 44, of Ridgeley, W.Va., was second (and men’s masters winner) in 17:11 while Ryan Shreve, 18, of Keyser, W.Va., took third in 17:36. Former Keyser High School teammate Taven Rohrbaugh, 16, of Burlington, W.Va., was fourth in 17:51.
