FULLY AUTOMATIC TIMING (f.a.t): Fully automatic timing is a system that
triggers the timing device before the sound of the gun reaches the athlete and uses a
photographic technology to record the finish times. This system produces times which are
not compatible with the "hand timing" used in the vast majority of high school meets. Here,
times to a hundredth of a second, i.e. 11.13s, are by fully automatic timing. Because
listings of high school marks consist almost exclusively of hand times, f.a.t. times must be
converted to hand time equivalents before inclusion on said lists. For 100m, 200m, and
hurdle conversions, 0.24 seconds are subtracted from the f.a.t. and the result is rounded
up to the nearest 0.1 second. For 400m, the conversion factor is 0.14 second. For
example, if a sprinter runs 100 meters in 11.13 seconds f.a.t., 0.24 seconds are
subtracted from that time and the resultant number (10.89 seconds) is rounded up to the
nearest tenth of a second. The converted time, 10.9 seconds, can then be placed on a
hand-timed listing as a reasonable equivalency. The National Federation rule book says
indicates a .24 converstion for all times.
