PARKTON, Md., Nov. 13 – Conduct a side-by-side photo comparison of Ian MacFawn and Jordan Davis while in stride on a cross country course. Backs straight and leaned forward. Arms just so – and biomechanically picture perfect.
Their postures are remarkably similar. Now, so are their high school trophy cases.

MacFawn equaled Davis’s label of state champion on Saturady at the Maryland Class 1A state cross country meet at Hereford High School. Cool, calm, collected and composed – from start to finish – MacFawn cruised to a nine-second win with a finishing time of 16 minutes and 47 seconds.

It came down to a finishing kick for the two-sport standout, who also excels in soccer. With about 500 meters to go, MacFawn’s lead on Williamsport junior Evan Hardy was less than half the nine-second margin of victory. But MacFawn’s finishing kick is superior to runner-up Hardy’s.
“I knew Evan would be there,” MacFawn said while making his way through the finisher’s chute. “I knew he would be challenging me no matter what. He did – even more than I thought he was going to do, definitely.”

MacFawn dominated the Class 1A West Region – he beat Hardy, again the hard-luck runner-up, by more than 25 seconds – on a rainy day under less than ideal conditions. Saturday, on the other hand, was sunny, dry and almost too warm with temperatures well into the 60s.

Still, MacFawn said he was “not really” confident about his ability to win a state title. In smaller races, MacFawn said he generally starts behind the lead pack and tries to work his way up to the front – an approach that typically has worked. In big meets – and Saturday’s state title meet is a big meet – MacFawn said his strategy changes.

“I try to go out fast,” he said. “I know the real contenders will go out fast. If you get stuck behind people, you could hit a tree.”

MacFawn credited Bohemia Manor’s talented duo of Ryan Pfarr and Cole Clifton in helping to create an opportunity for MacFawn to win. Because of them, MacFawn said he went out a little faster than usual. The senior – who is still deciding between Syracuse, the College of William and Mary or the University of Tennessee to where he will take his academic and athletic talents – hit the 1-mile point in 5:14, right with Clifton and one second ahead of Hardy and Pfarr.

“I probably wouldn’t have gone (out) as fast if they wouldn’t have,” MacFawn said.

Pfarr finished third in 17:31. Boonsboro senior Evan Moser was fourth in 17:41 and Clifton took fifth in 17:47.

MacFawn’s trophy case now looks eerily similar to that of Laura MacFawn, his older sister. The current Orangeman junior won three cross country state titles from 2005 to 2007.
