Early marathon registration ends Jan. 31
Six events waiting for your entry form
CUMBERLAND, Md., Jan. 14 -- A little more than two weeks remain for early-bird registration into the second Mountain Maryland Marathon Festival this April in downtown Cumberland.
There are six events in this year's lineup, including the 26.2-mile marathon, two-person marathon relay, the 5K for United Way, a kids 1.2-mile "marathon" and a 400-meter tot trot. In addition, the 13.1-mile run has been designated by the Road Runners Club of America as the 2010 Eastern Region Half Marathon Championship.
Entry fees for all six events go up beginning Feb. 1 and again April 1. All proceeds benefit the United Ways of the Potomac Highlands, which serves Hampshire and Mineral counties in West Virginia and Garrett and Allegany counties in Mountain Maryland.
"The staggered entry fees allow runners, on the front end, to get in at the lowest price possible," said Kevin Spradlin, executive director of the Mountain Maryland Marathon Club. "Runners who register later, even on race day, can certainly participate but they'll pay more. The goal is to try and make this event an annual one, and an affordable one. So, please, sign up early and save yourself a few dollars."
Last year's event attracted 512 registered runners from 13 states and Washington D.C. With the RRCA championship designation, up to 700 runners are expected on April 18.
The marathon club is conducting a public meeting on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. to discuss marathon business. The meeting location is 354 national Highway and is open to the public.
Other club-sponsored events include the Hobo's Heartbreaker 10K on Feb. 13 in southern Bedford County, Pa., and the Run for the Plunge 15K an 5K runs at Rocky Gap State Park on March 6.
New this year is the Race for Ryan, a 6K and 2K cross country race at Grace Academy in Washington County. The event, scheduled for April 3, is to raise funds for a new Ryan Myers Memorial Scholarship. Myers died last spring in a motorcycle accident at the age of 23. He is the son of Delegate LeRoy Myers. The race is held in conjunction with the local chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
