Frederick Girls Top Dulaney

Baltimore MD, 2/4/97 -- Led by a sensational 800 relay anchor by Michelle Higginbottom, the Frederick High School girls team won the team title in the Maryland High School Class 4/3 West Region Championships at the 5th Regiment Armory.

Coach Bill Smith fretted about his lineup for the 4x200 relay after two sprinters were mid-term academic casualties. He settled on Heather Sines, a half-miler, who led off and trailed the four-team field. Valerie Williams made up a lot of the ground, and Mardy Przywarty held her own, but Frederick stilll trailed Paint Branch by at least 20 meters when Higginbottom got the baton. It seemed hopeless, but Higginbottom's long strides cut relentlessly into the lead through the far turn. Then she swooshed past Paint Branch just before the finish line to the cheers of the entire Frederick girls and boys delegation.

Higginbottom also won the 55 (7.3) and 500 (1:20.9) as Frederick easily beat Baltimore area No. 1 ranked Dulaney, 70 to 45, despite a triple by Dulaney star Meghan White in the 800, 1600, and 3200. Przywarty won the 55 hurdles (8.5) for Frederick, and Williams was third in the 55 and high jump. Higginbottom salvaged second in the 300 after being boxed in by Paint Branch's Nadia and Natalie Johnson.
