Centofonti reminded his hometown crowd just what the varsity squad lost heading into this season - a race-winning, award-honored athlete who won the 2007 Herald-Mail Boys Runner of the Year and led the First Team All-County squad. He also earned Second Team All-State honors in cross country last fall after winning the MVAL Antietam Conference and Washington County championships and placing second in both the Class 1A West Region and 1A state meets. He ran a personal best 16:02.4 at the regional championship.

Beth Leasure, 45, won the women's title in 23:57, good for 24th place overall. Brandi Baith, 35, was second in 24:28 and Jennifer Erb, 38, was third in 25:53. Twenty-nine year old Megan Beckwith, daughter of the late Bill Beckwith, finished 45th overall in 31:15.

Ten-year-old Ryan Neff won the 1-mile fun run in 7:03, holding off Rebecca Neff, 9, who finished second in 7:17. Kevin Wilson, 8, was third in 7:19.

A total of 61 runners participated in the 5K and fun run. Proceeds from the race benefit the Smithsburg High School cross country team.

SMITHSBURG -- Former Leopard Corey Centofonti won the Bill Beckwith Memorial 5K at Smithsburg High School on in 17 minutes and 28 seconds in a "going away" fashion.

But the 2008 graduate isn't going far. Centofonti, 18, has committed to attend and compete for Hagerstown Community College beginning this fall.

From the start, it was a race for second place as Centofonti took an early lead and never looked back over the 3.1-mile, hilly course on paved, country roads. Ryan Shifler, 18, won the strategic fight for second, finishing in 18:19. Rob Hovermale, 44, was third in 18:22 and David Kurz, 17, was fourth in 18:28. Shifler, a Clear Spring High School graduate, is a freshman math major at HCC who posted a 17:42.24 personal best at the 5K,
