Frederick Relays 1/4/97

Middletown boys and Frederick girls were victorious in the first meet of the 1997 indoor track and field season, the Frederick Relays, at Hagerstown JC Saturday January 4. See below for detailed event winners.

Trailing Frederick by two points going in to the last event, Middletown's boys won the 4x400 relay to take the meet, 56-50. Anchor man Matt Covati caught the fast heat leaders on the last turn to lead Middletown to a winning 3:43.5 time. In the girls team competition, Frederick topped Linganore 63 to 47.5

The outstanding field event performance of the day was by Damien Kolbay of Walkersville, who pole vaulted 12' 10" for a new personal record.

This was an all-relay meet, with nine events: distance medley (800, 400, 1200, 1600), shuttle hurdle (sprint and hurdles combined times), 800 relay, sprint medley, (400, 200, 200, 800), 3200 relay, 1600 relay, high jump, shot put, and pole vault.

Boonsboro was third in boys with 38 points, followed by Thomas Johnson 35, Walkersville 32, Smithsburg 30, Linganore 28, North Hagerstown 8, Brunswick 2, Catoctin 1, and Clear Spring 1.

Derek Dye led the Middletown high jumpers (Jason Schrum and Steve Hanson) to a 10-point win, and the Middletown pole vaulters (Rick Kulina, Paul Vallette, and Richard Lelvy) tied for first with Boonsboro) to contribute to the team victory. Dye and Hansen also helped Middletown tie for first in the shuttle hurdles with Boonsboro. Frederick won the distance medley (Jimmy Daly, Matt Napier, David Burke and Justin Ward) and shot put (Vikram Gowda, Alton McCallum, and Jeff Brabitz).

Third in girls was Catoctin with 36 points, followed by Middletown 26, Boonsboro 25, Thomas Johnson 22, South Hagerstown 18, Smithsburg 15.5, North Hagerstown 11, Urbana 8, and Walkersville 4.

Frederick had four triple winning girls:

Mardy Przywarty (800 relay, 1600 relay, shuttle hurdle)

Michelle Higginbottom (800 relay, 1600 relay, shuttle hurdle)

Stacey Simon (800 relay, shuttle hurdle, high jump)

Linganore's Danielle Price, Michelle Barrick, and Susan Ludwick were on the winning distance medley and 3200 relay teams.

In field events, Kathy Messner of Catoctin won the girls high jump at 5' 6", and Natalie Dye was the top girls pole vaulter at 7' 6".
