Michelle Higginbottom Triples and Anchors Record 800 Relay
Four Meet Records Broken

Hagerstown MD 1/31/97 -- Walkersville boys and Frederick girls won as expected in the 1997 Frederick County High School Track and Field Indoor Championships as four meet records fell and Michelle Higginbottom tripled.

Walkersville won its first-ever indoor boys title with 112 points and Frederick won its first girls crown since 1983 with 122 points. Middletown was the boys runner-up with 78 points, followed by Frederick 71, Thomas Johnson 63, Linganore 45, Catoctin 21, Urbana 12, and Brunswick 1. Linganore was the girls runner up with 88 points, followed by Thomas Johnson 55, Catoctin 51, Middletown 42, Urbana 35, Walkersville 4, and Brunswick 3.

Higginbottom was the star of the meet with individual victories in the 55 (7.2), 300 (41.4 tying her own meet record), and 500 (1:20.6), and anchoring the winning 800 relay team in a meet record 1:48.1. The relay record surpassed Frederick's own mark in 1983, the last time the Frederick girls won the county championship. Mardy Przywarty was Frederick's other blue ribbon winner with a time of 8.5 in the 55 hurdles.

The boys championship was a first ever for Walkersville, which was led by Sean Allen's double in the 1600 (4:36.2) and 3200 (10:22.6). Other winners for the Lions were Chris Willis, who won the 800 in a school record 2:02.8; Rick Orchard in the 55 hurdles (8.4); and Damian Kolbay in the pole vault (12-6).

Other multiple winners were A. J. Waldon of Frederick in the boys 55 (6.6) and 300 (37.6) and Liz Lowrie of Urbana in the girls 1600 (5:21.8, a new meet record) and 3200 (12:10.3).

Other meet records were set by Kathy Messner in the girls high jump (5-6, breaking her own record) and the Linganore boys 3200 relay team (8:23.6, breaking the school's 1995 record by more than seven seconds). Natalie Dye of Middletown put her name on the record list by winning the first ever girls pole vault in a county meet with a jump of 7-6.

The performances of the Frederick County girls were better than the Montgomery County girls, who had their county championships the same night in Baltimore, in 10 of 12 events.
