WESTMINSTER, Md., April 14 – There’s quite a speedy tradition in the Kartalia household.

And if 10-year-old Emma Kartalia has anything to do with it, it might not be long before she follows in the footsteps of her successful father, Steve. On Wednesday, Emma set another personal best in the 28th annual Main Street Mile in downtown Westminster. The 5,280-foot affair features a promoted vertical drop in elevation of 144 feet.

As the beats of her shoes, and those of nearly 700 others, pounded the pavement, Emma paid attention to her watch strapped on her wristwatch.

At the end of her journey, she was all smiles.

“A lot better,” Emma analyzed this year’s performance over last year’s finishing time, “by half a minute.”

She finished in an unofficial time of 8 minutes and 14 seconds.

“I’m going to write (the time) on the back of my medal,” Emma said of the memorial token handed to each finisher of the Connor Smith Memorial Fun Run – the second of two heats that comprise the Main Street Mile.

Just like her father, who trains daily during his lunch hour in Washington, D.C., Emma arrived in top physical condition.

“I’ve been practicing with the running club at my school,” said the William Winchester Elementary School fifth-grade student. “If I keep practicing, I can get as fast as (Dad) can.”

Like her father, Emma sticks to a tough workout schedule, mixing in a variety of scheduled running club practices led by P.E. teacher Kelly Waterman with twice-weekly lacrosse practices, “and that’s a lot of running.”

There’s also a third time-honored tradition ripe for high-level exercise in the Kartalia homestead, located a few miles north of town on a plot of land beside her grandparents’ home.

Emma said she chases her sister, Annie, now 8 years old, through the house. Both benefit from the impromptu training sessions. Annie completed Wednesday’s run in 8:37, “which is faster than I ran last year when I was 9 years old,” Emma said.

The downhill footrace is not only a race against the clock. It’s also a quick trip with friends and family down Main Street with her father, mother Natalie and friend Flannery Bendel-Simso, also 10.
