LANDOVER, Md., Feb. 23 - At her regional championship meet inside the antiquated Baltimore National Guard Armory, Oxon Hill’s Evann Slaughter just couldn’t get her muscles loosened up enough to excel.

That wasn’t a concern on Tuesday. Slaughter, a senior high jumper, had plenty of opportunity - and took advantage of it - in the Class 4A girls indoor state championship meet at the Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex in Landover. Slaughter cleared 5 feet, 4 inches - 2 inches better than five others who split places two through six.

It was a prepared Slaughter that took the gold and led the Clippers to a fourth-place team finish with 40 points. C.H. Flowers took first with 66 points, followed by Northwest (56) and Eleanor Roosevelt (48).

The team’s finish “is actually not bad, considering the fact we only had five girls competing,” Slaughter said.

In Baltimore at the region meet, “the floor was all messed up,” Slaughter said. “It was really cold in there. My muscles weren’t warm. Coach (Derrell Quick) just told me (to) try to make it to states.”

Slaughter also finished sixth in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.81 seconds. Teammate and fellow senior Deseree King earned two first-place finishes. She toasted the field in the 500-meter run in 1 minute, 14.89 seconds. Northwest junior Britt Eckerstrom was second in 1:17.15.

In the 800 run, King eked out a 0.28-second victory over Eleanor Roosevelt junior Amirah Johnson. King clocked a 2:18.6 to Johnson’s 2:18.88. Jessica Wells finished sixth in the shot put for the Clippers.

For Slaughter, it all came down to the high jump. That’s because she might not compete in outdoor track - this spring or in college at Stony Brook University at Long Island, where she’ll study to become a pediatric neurosurgeon. She’s accepted a full athletic scholarship to play volleyball. Slaughter acknowledged that she “might jump” to stay in shape for volleyball. But there would be no sprinting or hurdles in her future.

This spring is a different story. Her senior class has mandatory obligations on days of the region and state meets, which said might keep her from competing at all.
