LEXINGTON, Kent. -- Four of the top six runners from the men's masters title-winning team at the USA Cross Country Championships in February return to action this weekend at Masterston Station Park.

More than 40 clubs and 1,000 athletes are expected to compete in the USATF National Club Cross Country Championships. Among them is Raymond Pugsley, of Potomac Falls, Virginia, who will lead the Carroll County-based Baltimore/Washington Athletic Club on Saturday in Lexington in the men's masters 10,000-meter race.

It's one of five events on the day. A community 6K begins at 9:30 a.m. and the masters women's 6K starts at 10:30 a.m. Their male counterparts kick off at 11:30 a.m. and the open women 6K (12:45 p.m.) and open men 10K (1:30 p.m.) also are on tap.

Pugsley was the first BWAC team member - and second overall in the men's 40-44 age division at Agricultural History Farm Park in Derwood, Md. He finished the 8,000-meter course in 25 minutes and 20 seconds, a mere 5 seconds behind winner Simon Gutierrez of Alamosa, Col.

David Berardi and Chris Chattin will represent the BWAC in the 45-49 division. In February, Berardi was sixth in the division with a time of 28:38 and Chattin placed 15th in 29:57.

Frederick resident Andres Wright clocked a 27:00 and Steve Kartalia, of Westminster, took eighth overall - and fourth in team scoring - in 27:05. Fellow Westminster High School graduate Mark Gilmore, of Columbia, took 17th in 27:53 and Peter Keating, also of Columbia, placed 21st in 28:31.

While Doug Mock - ninth in 27:17 - isn't back, the other four are "healthy and running well," Kartalia posted on facebook.

"The field should be deep and excellent and we might get to race in an ice storm if we're lucky," said the avid cross country runner. "I always hope for lousy conditions when it comes to cross country - makes it more fun."

The club is guided by Doug Renner, who also is head track and field and cross country coach at McDaniel College, a Division III school in Westminster. The Baltimore-Washington Athletic Club was founded in April 2002 as the Central Maryland Athletic Club.

"I think we're going to perform well," Renner said of the seven-member squad. "Obviously, these guys had a great experience in February. I think just the opportunity to compete as a team is what's really important to these guys."
