MANCHESTER, Md.—Boonsboro’s Lady Warriors demonstrated their talent at the MPSSAA Class 1A West Region Outdoor Track and Field Championship Friday, May 20, 2011 at Manchester Valley High School.

Several notable first-place finishers helped the Lady Warriors to win the 1A West Region crown with a total of 161 points.

Boonsboro claimed its first win of the meet in the girls’ 4x800-meter relay with a time of 10:09.74.

“I knew we wanted to win and beat the school record. I’m not sure if we did (beat the school record) or not, but we were close,” Boonsboro senior Amy Moore said.

“We definitely can (break the school record). We hope to break 10 minutes. I’m really proud of our team!”

Boonsboro sophomore Abby Duncan was a triple-winner in the girls’ 100-meter, 200-meter and 400-meter dash.

“I was really, really excited (about the 200),” Duncan said, “I was really pumped for this one. I felt really strong at the end, and I finished hard like I wanted to.”

One of Duncan’s 400 meter challengers was Catoctin’s freshman Savannah Steinly.

Steinly was a silver medalist in the girls’ 400 (1:00.95). Steinly was also the winner of the girls’ 800-meter run with a time of 2:26.94

“I was a little nervous,” Steinly said, “I just wanted to finish it up and do my best.”

Duncan was challenged in the 100 by Manchester Valley’s Erika Hurd (12.45), Oakdale’s Laura Klosterman (12.60) and Smithsburg’s Mia Cardone (12.93).

Klosterman was a silver and bronze medalist in the girls’ 200 (26.64) and 100, respectively.

Boonsboro freshman Maggie Sullivan was a double winner in the 100-meter hurdles (15.51) and 300-meter hurdles (47.66). Sullivan also helped her Boonsboro teammates with a first-place finish in the girls’ 4x200-meter relay and a second-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay.

Distance specialists Sarah Zielinski and Kortney Cunningham were gold medalists in the 3200 (11:55.77) and 1600-meter runs (5:28.32), respectively. Zielinski took third in the girls’ 1600 behind teammate Cunningham.

Smithsburg’s Lauren Johnson took second in the 1600.

“I felt pretty good about my race,” Johnson said. When asked what expectation she had about her race, Johnson said, “To honor God.”

Cunningham said, “I just wanted to thank God for helping me get through it, and (Zielinski) for helping to push me through it. It was just a good race.”

Catoctin’s junior Hannah Stone won the girls’ long jump (17 feet, ½ inch), triple jump (35 feet, 1 ½ inches) and took second place in the girls’ high jump (5 feet, 3 inches) to Manchester Valley’s Erika Hurd. Hurd had a winning jump of 5 feet, 7 inches.

“My goal is to make it to States in all four events,” Stone said. Those four events include triple jump, long jump, high jump and the 4x400-meter relay. “I want to (set a personal record) in all of my events at States.”

This summer, Stone plans to participate in the Maryland Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) girls’ heptathlon.

Boonsboro also had three MPSSAA qualifiers in the throwing events.

Senior Becky Young was another double-winner for the Lady Warriors in girls’ shot put and discus. Young won girls’ shot put with a distance of 34 feet, 5 inches. Young also won girls’ discus with a throw of 105 feet, 5 inches.

Young’s sophomore teammate Samantha Cochran also supplied team points for Boonsboro in girls’ shot put with a second-place throw of 31 feet, 3 inches.

Boonsboro senior Alicia Lauretti helped Young and the Lady Warriors with a second-place finish in girls’ discus. Lauretti threw 86 feet, 5 inches.

Cochran also provided team assistance in girls’ discus with a throw of 80 feet, 3 inches, earning fifth place.

Railroaders Edge Cougars for 1A West Region Championship

Frederick County boys’ teams Brunswick and Catoctin battled for first and second place at the MPSSAA 1A West Region Outdoor Track and Field Championship.

The Railroaders took the gold with a total of 112 team points. Catoctin took the silver with 110 points.

Catoctin senior Deven Patterson won the boys’ 200-meter (22.01) and 400-meter (49.51) dash.

“I felt good from start to finish,” Patterson said about his 200 meter race.

Brunswick’s senior Tyrus Lawson claimed second place in the boys’ 200.

“I felt really good about my performance,” Lawson said, “This is my first time running this (200-meter) event, so I just had one shot against Deven. I knew if I kept with [Patterson] then I would get a good time.”

Patterson’s teammates junior Zach Paguirigan and senior Brandon Humerick also helped Catoctin’s efforts in the sprinting events, as well as in the relay events.

Paguirigan took fifth place in the boys’ 200 (23.21), and Humerick took fourth place in the boys’ 400 (52.60).

Catoctin won the 4x100-meter, 4x200-meter and 4x400-meter relays. The Cougars also took second in the 4x800-meter relay (8:25.50) to winner Williamsport (8:25.13).

Williamsport’s junior Evan Hardy was a double-winner for the Wildcats in the boys’ 1600-meter (4:32.92) and 3200-meter run (9:48.56). Hardy was challenged each time by Allegany’s Ian MacFawn in the 3200 (9:49.70) and Brunswick’s senior Daniel Trettel in the 1600 (4:33.33).

“Before (the 1600-meter race), I was feeling pretty loose and not that nervous,” Trettel said, “I thought [MacFawn] was going to destroy me.”

Trettel also won the boys’ 800-meter run in a time of 2:02.89 against second-place MacFawn (2:02.56).

“I felt pretty good,” Hardy said, “It was a nice pace. We were all just trying to qualify (for the state meet).”

Brunswick junior Luke Campbell was a double-winner for the Railroaders in the boys’ 110- and 300-meter hurdle events. Campbell also contributed to Brunswick’s second-place efforts in the 4x200-meter and 4x400-meter relays.

“I felt really confident,” Campbell said about his 300-meter hurdle race.

Smithsburg’s Johnny Karroll took first place ahead of Brunswick’s Nathan Diaz in boys’ pole vault. Both Karroll and Diaz jumped 11 feet, 9 inches.

Karroll’s Smithsburg teammate Nick Porter also contributed team points with a fifth-place jump of 11 feet, 3 inches.

Karroll was a bronze medalist for the Leopards in boys’ long jump (19 feet, 11 inches). Boonsboro’s Coby Gussio was the boys’ long jump winner with a jump of 21 feet, 10 inches.

John “J.R.” Lowery was a double-winner for Boonsboro in boys’ shot put (56 feet, 1 ½ inch) and boys’ discus (137 feet, 1 inch).

The top four place finishers advance to next week’s MPSSAA Class 1A State Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Class 1A action begins Thursday, May 26, 2011 and concludes Saturday, May 28, 2011 at Morgan State University in Baltimore.
