Middletown -- Saturday's high winds gave Stone Bridge the edge it would need to defeat Middletown 's boys in the fourth annual Don Boyer Invitational Track and Field Meet.
The 17-team field had to contend with a sustained wind of about 25 mph and gusts of about 40 mph all day. The high winds led to the cancellation of the pole vault, where the host Knights were heavy favorites.
With that event gone from the day's lineup, it would all come down to the final event of the day, the boys 1,600-meter relay.
Three points separated second-place Middletown from first-place Stone Bridge going into the final two events. The Bulldogs won the first of these, the boys 400 relay. The Knights would have to win the 1,600 relay and hope Stone Bridge would get fourth or less for the meet title.Read More

For Winfield, the playing field changes this season.
After running circles around Class AA competition for years at the state track meet, the Generals are moving on up to AAA
The resistance they meet will undoubtedly toughen, but their goals remain the same - to go as far and as fast as they can.
"I know it will be a challenge to them, but they're up to it,'' said Shawn Anderson, Winfield's boys coach, at the BB&T George Washington Classic Friday at Laidley Field.
"And I think they're having fun. I know all of us on the coaching staff are having a lot of fun with the kids.''
The past few seasons sure have been a lot of fun for the Generals, who swept both the boys and girls state meet championships in the same year five times since 1998.
They had more good times Friday as Winfield more than doubled runner-up Buckhannon-Upshur (154-66) to take the BB&T boys team title, and the Generals finished as runners-up to B-U in the girls meet (107-931/3).Read More

Breezy Boyer meet blows Knights to top four finishes
Middletown boys finish second, girls fourth in 16-team Invitational
The April showers didn't even touch the Don Boyer Invitational at Middletown High on Saturday. Instead, the April wind tunnel added a whole new element to the meet's events.
Winds went from a low breeze of 6 mph to blasting gusts of 20 mph, with a peak speed of 29 mph. The only constant about them was the direction — barreling right down the homestretch.
The wind was a simultaneous blessing and curse. It knocked out the pole vault event completely, robbing Middletown of one of its key advantages. Left in a foot race of relays against Virginia's Stone Bridge, the Knights came up just three points shy, 103-100 1/3. Linganore placed third with 62 points. Read More

Harris sisters help Urbana place second
Twins combine to win three events as Hawks finish runner-up at the Scott Invitational
by Todd McElwee | Staff Writer
Officially, Saturday afternoon's meet at Boonsboro High was known as the Dwight Scott Track & Field Invitational.
But for many of the Frederick and Carroll county residents in attendance it will be remembered as the "Harris Sister Showcase." Combining to win three events, Urbana's Chardae and Charma Harris stole the show over the weekend in Washington County.
"It's fun," Chardae Harris said. "We're not really competitive since we do different events, but it's always nice to both win."
Charma Harris struck first. A basketball player, she got a late start to the track season and was making only her second meet appearance of the campaign. After winning her debut in the 100 meters at Westminster, she found success again at Boonsboro. Building off a solid start, she clipped South Carroll's Cody Mezebish 13:11 to 13:26 for the victory in the same event.Read More
