Wanting to or not, Brown cruises to Capon Valley 50K victory
Speidel leads competitive women’s field to finish
YELLOW SPRING, W.Va. - Karsten Brown is a runner with a mixed blessing.
He’s both fast and steady enough to be at or near the front of the pack in virtually any distance event over seven miles he chooses to race. But even on days he’s not expected to contend - by his own standards and expectations - the 35-year-old Front Royal, Va., resident is a crowd favorite to vye for the win.
Brown used a little of both elements - and a little bad fortunate by two other contenders - to take his first-ever Capon Valley 50K (31-mile) trail run that started and finished at the serene Capon Valley Ruritan Club  Read More

31-hour run results in new friendships, sore muscles
SOUTH MOUNTAIN, Pa. – “That’s just wrong.”
Jim Rodriguez, athletic director for Carroll County Public Schools, wasn’t talking about a rules violation or a week’s worth of rainouts that cluttered the spring sports schedule.
Instead, the 40-something running veteran was speaking of teammate Fred Hudson and the truly unfortunate series of hills Hudson was obligated to cover over a 6.7-mile stretch atop South Mountain, Pa., mid-afternoon on Friday.
It was hot. It was difficult. And it was just the beginning, as Hudson, Rodriguez and 10 others represented the Westminster Road Runners Club on a journey – by foot – from Gettysburg, Pa., to Washington, D.C. The total distance covered was reported to be between 204.5 and 220 miles.Read More

Oates, Vest win first Mountain Marathon
Men’s, women’s champions each set personal best times

CUMBERLAND — Doug Oates may have been willing to settle for second place, but gladly accepted first when he broke the tape in the first Mountain Maryland Marathon Sunday in Cumberland with a personal best time of 2 hours, 44 minutes and four seconds.
The clouds beat the hundreds of runners to the starting line, but the rain balked as runners from one end of the country to the other took to the course in five events that began and concluded near the Western Maryland Station at Canal Place  Read More

Reed, Lewis top field in 1-mile XC run
SHORT GAP, W.Va. – Joel Reed is not yet 13. And that makes a big difference.
An error in preliminary results showed Reed, 12, finishing in fourth place in the 13-and-older division of the Queen City Junior Striders 1-mile cross country run Tuesday at Frankfort High School.
In his proper 12-and-under age group, Reed was first among 57 others to get to the finish line with a time of 6 minutes, 42 seconds on the out-and-back course with challenging, uneven terrain. Canyon Lohnas, 12, of Frostburg, was second with a time of 7:16 and Brooks Mickey, 12, was third in 7:24.
Brayden Pennington, 12, placed fourth in 7:47 while Dakota Bierman, 11, rounded out the top five with a time of 7:48.Read More

DeWitt does it before saying ‘I do”
Beall High, Lehigh grad wins 5K less than 6 hours before wedding

LONACONING – Dan DeWitt had a better reason than anyone to cross the finish line on Saturday during the 21st annual Iron Furnace 5K run in southwestern Allegany County.
Maybe that’s why he finished first.
DeWitt, 21, of Frostburg, had a 2 p.m. wedding to attend – his own – and covered the 3.1-mile road course in 15 minutes and 35 seconds to easily place first among more than 250 registered runners and walkers. He averaged 5:01 per mile  Read More

Reeds fare well in running to finish line
FROSTBURG — Young Madison Reed might have felt the need to make up for lost miles after suffering from a stomach ache two weeks ago during the start of the Queen City Junior Striders summer running series.
Of course, there might also have been a hint of sibling rivalry as Madison, 10, of Ellerslie, competed with her younger brother Mason, 5, and more than 130 others on Tuesday in both the 1-mile and 2-mile runs at Parris N. Glendening Park in Frostburg.
The Reeds took turns leading each other to the finish line. Madison edged Mason in the shorter distance and finished in 9 minutes, 42 seconds — about 3 seconds in front of Mason. Madison placed 22nd out of 56 runners ages 12 and under. Mason finished 23rd.Read More
