Katie’s 5K a measuring stick for goals set, rewards earned
Caupp, Bridges win in New Germany State Park
GRANTSVILLE, Md. - Katie’s 5K race director Norm DeRosa paraphrased running legend Bill Rodgers before the start of Saturday’s jaunt through New Germany State Park when he said running a race was a celebration.
“It is for me,” agreed fellow runner Tony Yurko.
It likely was for many others, too. But for Mike Wagus, Saturday’s run meant a lot more. The 41-year-old Cumberland resident recently lost more than 80 pounds and started walking, then jogging. Katie’s 5K was his first time at the starting line of an organized event. It was a reward, a goal - and maybe a sign of things to come.Read More

Allegany standout Ian MacFawn and Fort Hill standout Amanda Twigg led the inaugural field of approximately 400 runners and walkers at Saturday’s Cumberland City Mini-Marathon.

Veteran runner Tony Yurko earned a solid third place finish with a time of 15 minutes and 51 seconds over the rolling course that started at Greenway Avenue Stadium, continued through Constitution Park with a return finish on the 50 yard line in the stadium.Read More

2008 West Virginia 5K State Championship
Benford pulls away from Putnam 200 meters from finish line
Davis leads women’s field by comfortable margin

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Andrew Benford has run in only a handful of road races in all of his 23 years.
After Saturday’s win in the inaugural West Virginia 5K Run/Walk Championship, don’t be surprised if the 23-year-old Ravenswood, W.Va., resident – and University of Richmond standout – tries another one soon.
Benford, who just missed qualifying for the NCAA outdoor track championships, eeked out a 1.6-second victory over Eric Putnam as the two neared Putnam Square in downtown Huntington. Benford stopped the clock in 14 minutes, 54.3 seconds. Putnam finished in 14:55.9 Read More

2nd Annual Strides for Health and Fitness
Mertz back on track, wins 5K
CUMBERLAND – The 112th running of the Boston Marathon this past April was not a good experience for David Mertz.
Training for the 26.2-miler had gone very well. He was pumped. Then, on race day, he came up lame. Tendonitis in his left ankle. He painfully made his way through the race but decided to drop out several miles before the finish line.
It stung. And recent training suggested that he wasn’t coming back fast as he’d prefer, as he experienced a see-saw of good days and bad days, more bad than good.Read More

McFarland overcomes obstacles to finish Salem Challenge 5K
Orellana, Moreland claim running titles in inaugural event
FROSTBURG — It was somehow fitting that 14-year-old Sydney McFarland finished last in the first Salem Challenge 5K run.
After all, somebody had to. And McFarland, battling asthmatic symptoms, served as good a representative as student at the private Salem School on the Garrett County side of Frostburg of the trials and tribulations many resident students face on a daily basis.
Just like them, McFarland gutted out a 3.1-mile effort in 53 minutes and 45 seconds. Nothing spectacular, but she made it to the finish line under her own power — thanks, in large part, to her impressive willpower  Read More

Bill Beckwith 5K offers ‘smalltown charm’ – and a challenge
Shriver combines ‘love of running’ will hilly course offering
SMITHSBURG – Braden Grosh thinks the reason to run the annual Bill Beckwith 5K run in Smithsburg on Saturday, July 18 is that it offers the best of two worlds.
\“You go through the city of Smithsburg,” said Grosh, who just turned 17 and is preparing for her senior season as a top-five runner for the Smithsburg Leopards varsity cross country team. “It has that smalltown charm. It also goes around back roads and you see all the farming culture of Smithsburg.” Read More

No shortcuts in long trip to Australia
Armentrout readies for international experience
CUMBERLAND – Brittany Armentrout had a lot on her mind Friday morning as she met fellow Frankfort High School graduate Allison Tappe for a 50-minute run in downtown Cumberland.
Tappe might have forgiven Armentrout if she’d simply skipped the pre-run stretching routine the two have developed over the past four years. After all, Armentrout’s thoughts were on her boyfriend, packing her suitcase and her flight out of Pittsburgh the next day. To Cleveland. Then Los Angeles. Then Brisbane and on to Sydney, Australia, for the annual Down Under Sports international games.Read More
