Hampshire’s Binotto: ‘ready to rock ‘n’ roll’
Senior set to return from ankle injury Saturday at Geico Classic
ROMNEY, W.Va. – It was difficult for Hampshire senior John Paul “J.P.” Binotto to watch on Aug. 23 as Jefferson’s Cory Hampshire worked his way to a 15-minute, 59-second 5,000-meter cross country win at Sam Michael’s Park.It was difficult because, when healthy, Binotto expects to compete with Hampshire for bragging rights as one of the top runners in West Virginia’s Class AAA division. Conneway, Davis class of Don Swiger Invite

Can Hampshire senior Rana Conneway win? The 17-year-old is 2-for-2 so far in this young cross country season as she led from start to finish for the second consecutive race. Conneway won the Don Swiger Invitational girls title on her home course with a time of 21 minutes, 43 seconds.Read More

John Macklen: Meeting Billy Mills ‘made my day’
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – For 44-year-old Ridgeley, W.Va., resident John Macklen Sr., meeting Billy Mills on Saturday might not have been the opportunity of a lifetime. But it was close.
Macklen and his wife, Tina Macklen, competed in the 1st annual Race for the Nation 5K, a 3.1-mile race in which John Macklen ran better than usual. It was a distance of about 30 feet that he was more interested in.That was the gap between him and Mills, the 1964 Gold Medalist at 10,000 meters, just a few minutes before the start of the race. Mills served as the official race starter and master of ceremonies. Mills, now 70, is the only American, male or female, to win a gold medal in the 10,000-meter run since Read More

Mountaintop Combo
KINGWOOD, W.Va. The success of Saturday¹s Mountaintop Combo cross country meet depends on Preston Coach Paul Martin and a host of volunteers providing unprecedented runner support during a competitor¹s stay.
But once the starter¹s pistol is fired, the glitz and glamour will be tuned out. The focus on the boys race will be on a field which includes eight of the top 10-ranked runners in Class AAA West Virginia as well as a handful of Virginia and Ohio runners we don¹t know well enough to rank.
It¹s at the starting line where are runners are created equal two legs, two arms and a heart full of ambition to see things through over a challenging 5,000-meter course. At the sound of the gun, though, the field will separate quickly enough if not by the smarts of the runners themselves, then by the will of the course Read More

Kasprowicz cruises to convincing Mountaintop Combo win
KINGWOOD, W.Va. – Keri Bland. Rachel Buser. Ari Kasprowicz just might out do them both.
Kasprowicz cruised to yet another unchallenged victory on Saturday in the girls varsity race of the Mountaintop Combo, run on the Preston harrier’s home course at Preston High School.Whereas Jefferson senior Cory Hampshire took the lead for good in the boys race with just over a half-mile to go, Kasprowicz ran from the front after about 600 meters and never looked back.
