NEW CREEK, W.Va. -- Winning the Class AA/A Region II cross country
championship on Thursday was just a short day's work for Berkeley Springs
senior Lenny Roach.

A training day, that is.

The Indians' No. 1 runner sped to the front of the 59-runner field and had
little reason to look back as won in 17 minutes and 8 seconds. Roach
finished 19 seconds in front of Philip Barbour junior Riley Freeman (17:27),
who edge fellow junior David Rhodes of Tucker County (17:28).

"I hope to win the state (championship)," Roach said after waiting at the
end of the chute to congratulate his teammates.

Roach noted he should be among the favorites the individual Class AA/A
championship on Nov. 1 at Cabell Midland High School in Ona, W.Va., and on
Thursday he wanted to "personally prove" he belonged in discussions with the
state's other top runners.

"There wasn't much competition here for me," Roach said. "It was more of a
training day."

Grafton's Drew Woodford (17:30) was fourth while Roach's teammates John
Mundey (17:51) and Jake Wise (17:53) helped the Indians to the team title
with a meet-low 40 points. Philip Barbour was second with 53 points in the
eight-team field. Grafton, the final team qualifier, was third with 76
points followed by Tucker County (101), Keyser (105), Frankfort (154),
Lincoln (154) and Pendleton County (211).

Keyser senior Ryan Shreve placed 12th overall, just two spots behind the
final individual qualifier. His season ended after completing the
5,000-meter course - plus some, most said Thursday - but not without a gutsy
display of concentration to remain in the race.

"It was tough," Shreve said. "I should have gotten top 10. I started
throwing up the last 200 meters. I was just so tired."

Rebekah McBride, of Frankfort, was just as dominant was Roach in the girls
race. McBride finished in 20:27 and, like Roach, led her team to the state
meet. The Falcons placed third with 67 points. Grafton won with 45 points
and Berkeley Springs was second with 49 points.

Keyser was fourth with 107 points, followed by Tucker County (130),
Liberty-Harrison (147), Philip Barbour (159) and Lincoln (212).
