SG girls win XC region title
WILLIAMSPORT - The Southern Garrett girls cross country team outdistanced
host Williamsport by 11 points to win the Class 1A West Region title on
Thursday at Williamsport High School.

Krista Hollingsworth¹s fifth-place finish in 20 minutes, 47.1 seconds led
the Rams to the win. Teammates Jennifer Cosner (13th, 21:44.7), Lindsey
Smith (14th, 21:55.1), Katie Gindlesberger (16th, 22:04.9) and Ashley Gordon
(18th, 22:16.4) all finished inside the top 18 finishers, who qualify
individually for the Class 1A state championship Nov. 8 in Parkton, Md.
Southern Garrett had little to worry about, however, as they led the 10-team
field with 66 points. Williamsport scored 77 points while Mountain Ridge
(104), Smithsburg (131) and Catoctin (136) all qualified for the state meet
on a team basis.
Brunswick senior Sara Fisher won in 18:32.6. Fort Hill, led by Amanda
Twigg¹s second-place finish in 19:32.3, was eighth in the team standings
with 168 points.

Other individual qualifiers in the girls races included Sierra Wassell of
Mountain Ridge (11th, 21:31.5) and fellow Miner Katie Precht (17th,
22:11.7).

Sophomore George Hansrote led the Mountain Ridge boys team to a second-place
finish in the boys race with 77 points. Williamsport won with 47 points.
Allegany was fifth with 116 points and Fort Hill edged Southern Garrett -
167 points to 168 - for the sixth and final team spot to qualify for the
state meet.

Allegany sophomore Ian MacFawn led county finishers in the boys race with a
fourth-place finish in 16:42.1, just 5.7 seconds off third-place David
Wilson of Smithsburg. Williamsport¹s Mike Lilley won in 15:49.8 and Wildcats
teammate Naseem Haje was second in 16:11.5.

After MacFawn was Hansrote, then Miner Josh Shuck placedd seventh in 17:00.1
and Chuckie Upperman was 10th in 17:05. Camper Robbie Taylor, a junior, was
11th oaverall in 17:11.9 and Sentinel Jack Meekins placed 14th in 17:16.6.
Chris DeRosa, of Mountain Ridge, placed 19th overall in 17:31.7 and rounded
out the boys¹ individual state qualifiers.

Mountain Ridge coach Norm DeRosa said things worked out pretty much just as
he and coach Tom Dawson had planned, but the state meet is a totally
different course.

This course was very flat and fast,DeRosa said, and anything can happen
next week.

Lilley, Wildcats lead the pack in 1A West

WILLIAMSPORT — Michael Lilley said he just couldn’t find his rhythm Thursday afternoon at the Maryland Class 1A West Cross Country Championships.

But because the Williamsport senior marches to his own beat, he stood out anyway.

“I just couldn’t get my legs rolling, and I couldn’t relax,” Lilley said. “Being in school all day kind of drains you. It’s a little bit different than racing on weekends.

“But I still won by a pretty good margin, so I’m not totally bummed.”

Lilley did more than just win on his home course, he set the course record, covering the 3 miles in 15 minutes, 49.8 seconds. Two-time state champion Ryan Bowser of Northern Garrett set the previous mark of 15:53.7 at last year’s region Read More
