FROSTBURG – Just a few hours after competing in the Maryland Class 1A West Region cross country championship in Williamsport on Thursday, 15-year-old Tim Robinette placed 13th in the Main Street Mile in Frostburg in a time of 5 minutes, 5.3 seconds.
Robinette, a junior at Allegany High School, participated in the event to try and maintain or improve upon his 25th spot in the Queen City Striders series standings. The Main Street Mile was the seventh in an eight-race circuit. The event is unique with its 6:35 p.m. start time, beginning just before the start of the Mountain City's Halloween Parade. The route, primarily downhill, is lined with ready-made spectators and fans who cheered along runners of all ages and abilities.
But Robinette wasn’t the only runner pulling double duty this week. Jaron Hawkins, 25, of Frostburg, felt rested enough four days after setting a personal best at the Marine Corps Marathon to stop the clock in 4:07.2.
Woody Snoberger, 23, of Ridgeley, W.Va., was second overall in 4:18.6 and Dave Mertz, 22, of Cumberland, was third in 4:23.6. Mertz also ran the Marine Corps Marathon on Sunday. Dennis Coleman, 50, of Gaithersburg, won top men’s masters honors by finishing fifth overall in 4:32.8.
Great Allegany Run 15K winner Jen Sober, of McHenry, led all females to the finish line. The 35-year-old placed ninth overall in 4:48.4. Keyser High School senior Chelsea Willis, 17, was second in the women’s standings (and 14th overall) in 5:11.7 and Amber Leatherman, 32, of Fort Ashby, W.Va., was third (and 17th overall) in 5:24
Paula Bridges, 42, of Cumberland, was the top women’s masters runner. Bridges finished 26th overall in 5:44.1.
The school with the most affiliated runners received a cash prize by race organizers from the Frostburg State University’s Health and Physical Education Department. FSU won the prize this year with 10 affiliated runners. Mount Savage and Route 40 schools tied for second with five runners each. A total of 17 schools were represented among the 57 runners.
The eighth and final Queen City Striders circuit race is the fourth annual 5K Jingle Run at in Fort Ashby, W.Va. The 3.1-mile race and 1-mile fun run is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Dec. 13. For more information visit www.qcstriders.org.
