Bonnette places 10th in NCR Marathon
Results
SPARKS, Md. – Beall High School graduate Scott Bonnette averaged better than seven minutes per mile to earn a top-10 finish on Saturday at the NCR Trail Marathon in Sparks, Md.
Bonnette, 20, of Frostburg and currently a sophomore at Wheeling Jesuit University, finished 10th overall and fifth in his age group by crossing the line in an unofficial chip time of 2 hours, 57 minutes and 17 seconds. Doug Mock, 41, of Ellicott City, Md., won with an official time of 2:41:52.
Bonnette covered the first 13.1 miles in 1:25:07 – a pace slightly better than 6:30 – along the first half of the marathon route, which primarily follows the Northern Central Railroad Trail. The start and finish are at Sparks Elementary School and the first and last few miles of the race are on paved roads.
There are a few hills that begin and end the course but most of the race takes place along the flat stretches of the NCR Trail, the surface of which is a compacted combination of dirt and fine stone. The trail winds along Gunpowder River through quiet farmland.
Bonnette was sixth at the turnaround point but a slower, 1:32:10 second half resulted in his overall 6:46 pace. His effort was good for second overall in the men’s 20-29 age group.
LaVale resident Karen Smith, 42, finished 324th among 389 finishers. Smith averaged 10:48 per mile for a finishing chip time of 4:42:45. Like Bonnette, she had unfriendly, positive splits of 2:08:46 at the halfway mark and 2:34 to the finish line.
