KENSINGTON, Md., Jan. 3 – Alexandra Steinberg Barrage hit the 9-mile mark of the Al Lewis 10-mile run in Kensington on Sunday in about 68 minutes. She knew, then, she had little time to waste if she were to achieve her goal of negative splits.Mission accomplished.

“Just barely,” said the 33-year-old from Arlington, Va., as she headed to her pre-positioned water bottle shortly after crossing the finish line in 76 minutes and 20 seconds. “I was just trying to survive.”

It was a good day for Steinberg Barrage, who placed second in the women’s 30-39 age division. It also was a good day for Matt Lowe.

The 28-year-old Arlington resident was the only runner to crack 60 minutes by mastering the out-and-back course along the paved Rock Creek Trail better than anyone else. At the turnaround point atop Old Spring Road, Lowe had a healthy lead over Kevin D’Amanda, 46, of Bethesda, and David A.F. Haaga, 47, of Rockville.

Lowe cruised to the finish first among 183 finishers in 59:20. D’Amanda was second in 61:49 and Haaga placed third in 62:12, holding off Jason Change, 28, of Silver Spring (62:20). Joerg Schroeder, 41, of Rockville, placed eighth overall in 63:22 to win the men’s masters title.

Win Persina, 48, of Washington, D.C., edged Kensington resident Cindy Conant for the women’s title. Persina finished in 68:39 to Conant’s 68:44. The two finished 15th and 16th, respectively, overall. Christy Sporidis, 40, of Potomac, was third (and 20th overall) in 69:51. Sheryl Kline, 46, of Annapolis, won the women’s masters title by finishing 22nd overall in 70:10.

The event was sponsored by the D.C. Road Runners Club of Falls Church, Va., and directed by Aaron and Sharone Cheskis. For more information and future race dates visit www.dcroadrunners.org.
