GREENWAY AVENUE STADIUM
Race Information
She's old. She's bold and a icon to the community and the state of Maryland. She has seen depression, wars, snow, floods and vandalism. She has had football great to grace her surfaces, world leaders have visited her and is the home to countless high school and community activities.
Everyone who graces these pages know who I am talking about. It is the Grand Lady of high school sports in the State of Maryland and has been voted by the high school coaches of Maryland as the Number One high school stadium in the state. That "Ole Lady" is Greenway Avenue Stadium in Cumberland, Maryland.
She is the "Home of Champions" from both Fort Hill and Allegany high schools in many sports including football and track.
The "Ole Lady" was built in the early 1930's through the Franklin Roosevelt administration under the WPA organization. She first saw her first football game in 1937 as the Allegany Campers took on Davis high school from Davis, West Virginia and won 32-14. It was in that year that "the rivalry" between Fort Hill and Allegany first played at then...Fort Hill Stadium.
On November 25, 1937, the first touchdown in the series was scored by Paul Kemp on a 2 yard pass from Jim Gaffney who later went on to Washington Redskins fame. Allegany won the first contest 6-2 as the Sentinels scored on a safety.
The following year, the rivalry game was postponed due to freezing weather and a terrible snow storm. When game did happen...it was played at night for the first time. All of these years, the "Ole Lady" has stood the test of time. She has had some modifications here and there, an add on over here, new lights there. However, after 72 years of loyal service to the City of Cumberland, she needs our help desparately!
So now its time for us, the community of Cumberland and Allegany County to give back to the "Ole Lady." She is in dire need of a major facelift and her funds are lacking to do the required repairs and updates. THAT'S WHERE WE COME INTO THE PICTURE!
The City of Cumberland, the stadium renovation committee, the fans, supporters, alumni and the Queen City Striders, have come together to help raise the required monies to renovate the lady in the form of a "Mini Marathon."
Cumberland City mini-marathon "at the Stadium" on April 25, 2009. The 2.62 mile run will start inside of Greenway Ave. stadium and run into Constitution Park and finish inside of the stadium ON the 50 yard line. A 1 1/2 mile walk will take place at the same time.
After the run and walk are completed there will be a fun run for the younger children. It will be a 100-yard run from one end zone to the other.
The race and the walk will be timed by the Queen City Striders. Awards will be given for overall male and female winners and first three finishers in each age group. Shirts will be given to all pre-registered participants and will they last on race day.
The purpose of this event is to raise money for the stadium renovation and to promote a healthy life style for our children and adults in this area.
Folks...this is a worthy cause to help renovate our beautiful stadium. We have a wonderful history in this community with our high school sports and traditions. If we don't soon fix our lovely lady, soon she will be taken away from us and turned to rubble like a bag of garbage.
WE NEED YOUR HELP AND NEED IT NOW! This is a very good way to help keep our beautiful stadium from falling by the way side and to keep this historic landmark in place for our future high school stars.
PLEASE HELP!
