Snoberger debuts in marathon at 2:40:08

Results - Marathon  Half-Marathon

WASHINGTON, D.C.- William Woody Snoberger spent Saturday night at a local movie theater watching the new blockbuster movie ³Watchmen, a superhero
conspiracy film set in an alternate 1985.

And the running time for the movie? Not nearly long enough.
I can barely walk right now, said William Woody Snoberger several hours after making his marathon debut in Washington, D.C. Snoberger, 24, of
Ridgeley, W.Va., finished the fourth annual National Marathon in a net time of 2 hours, 40 minutes and 8 seconds - a 6:07 pace over the 26.2-mile distance.

Snoberger has tiered goals heading into the event. On the best possible day,he figured to run under 2:40.

I missed it by 8 seconds, he said. I was pretty happy with it overall. I was hoping to be under 2:40. Still, to be that close on the first one, Iım pretty happy with that.

Snoberger placed 14th overall, just 17 seconds behind the 13th-place finisher. But for how close the end result was, Snoberger said he found himself in no-manıs land² for much of the last 10 miles.

Really, I felt good until (mile) 16, 17, Snoberger said. I started hurting a little bit at that point. At mile 22, 23, thatıs the section where
I was starting to feel like I was falling apart a little bit. I was running on a long straight-away. I was stuck in no-manıs land the last 10 miles running along the river (into) a little bit of a headwind

His was a disciplined race. Snoberger went out in 38:28 over the first 6.2 miles (a 6:12 pace) and hit the halfway mark in 1:19:59 - a 6:07 clip
overall. With 6.2 miles remaining, Snoberger was averaging 6:05 per mile and hit his fastest mile of the day, a 5:59 at mile 20.

Snoberger was cheered along the route by his wife, Molly Snoberger, and best friend John Sine.

Friends Jaron Hawkins, Jeremy Rice and Rob Smith all competed in the half marathon and found him near the finish line afterward.
Hawkins, 26, of Frostburg, placed 15th overall in the 13.1-mile race in 1:14:34 (5:42 pace). Jeremy Rice, 27, also of Frostburg, finished in 39th
place in 1:19:39 while Cumberland area resident Rob Smith, 44, placed 71st in 1:24:38.

Snoberger was last yearıs Scholar Athlete of the Year award winner before graduating from West Virginia Wesleyan College in May 2008. Rather than
resting on the past, Snoberger, a Frankfort High School graduate, already is looking toward marathon No. 2.

He said he planned on competing in a number of local races this summer before attempting the Chicago Marathon in October.
