Offstein sets girls course record in Kids Mile Challenge
Lohnas stakes claim as areaıs fastest young miler
CUMBERLAND - Canyon Lohnas might not have received the recognition he was due after winning last monthıs Kids Marathon 1.2-mile run in downtown Cumberland.
An error in the early results of the Kids Marathon showed Lohnas as finishing second. But on Saturday at the Kids Mile Challenge, Lohnas made sure he was No. 1 and that there was no confusion.
The 12-year-old Frostburg resident surged past young Joel Reed at about the halfway point and held on for a slim but convincing victory in the Kids Mile Challenge around the single-loop dirt and gravel track at Allegany College of Maryland.
Lohnas finished in 6 minutes, 24 seconds. Reed took second in 6:28 while Andrew Heft, 11, placed third in 6:36.
Madison Offstein, Chesni Ultis and Ashlyn Hormuth were expected to contend for the girls title. But the latter two were caught unaware when Offstein started off with the overall leaders.
Offstein separated herself from the rest of the girls field quickly. Once she reached the halfway point near the wooden bridge on the backstretch of the mile loop, Offstein was look toward third. She was on Heftıs heels for another 300 meters but held on for a comfortable and course record-setting victory in 6:49.
Ultis was second, and sixth overall, in 7:03 while Hormuth took third in 7:06. Kylee Buckbee, 10, placed ninth overall and fourth in the girls field in 7:11. A total of 73 young athletes completed the 1-mile run. A couple dozen more children completed the 400- and 100-meter dash runs.
Fourteen adults completed the Parents Mile Challenge in the footsteps of their kids. Nick Reed, Joelıs father, won in 5:59. Cresaptown Elementary School teacher Kari Brown was second overall and took the womenıs title with a time of 6:21.
