Reeds fare well in running to finish line

FROSTBURG — Young Madison Reed might have felt the need to make up for lost miles after suffering from a stomach ache two weeks ago during the start of the Queen City Junior Striders summer running series.
Of course, there might also have been a hint of sibling rivalry as Madison, 10, of Ellerslie, competed with her younger brother Mason, 5, and more than 130 others on Tuesday in both the 1-mile and 2-mile runs at Parris N. Glendening Park in Frostburg.
The Reeds took turns leading each other to the finish line. Madison edged Mason in the shorter distance and finished in 9 minutes, 42 seconds — about 3 seconds in front of Mason. Madison placed 22nd out of 56 runners ages 12 and under. Mason finished 23rd.
Kristian Robinette, 10, of Fort Ashby, W.Va., won the overall title in 6:36 and Marie Lewis was the top female finisher in 7:24.
In the 13-and-older division, Derek Fuller, 14, won in 6:19 and Madison Offstein was the first young lady to cross the finish line. Offstein, 13, finished ninth overall in 7:18.
In the 2-mile cross country run, Mason Reed finished in front of his older sister in 39th place in 22:47. Madison Reed was 40th in 24:06. Jaron Hawkins, 26, of Frostburg, was first overall in 12:09. Marie Lewis, 10, was the top female in 18:36.
The third of the six-race series is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Frankfort High School in Short Gap, W.Va. The cost is $1 per runner. Call Dennis Mickey at (304) 738-0511 for more information.
