Reed, Lewis top field in 1-mile XC run
SHORT GAP, W.Va. – Joel Reed is not yet 13. And that makes a big difference.

An error in preliminary results showed Reed, 12, finishing in fourth place in the 13-and-older division of the Queen City Junior Striders 1-mile cross country run Tuesday at Frankfort High School.
In his proper 12-and-under age group, Reed was first among 57 others to get to the finish line with a time of 6 minutes, 42 seconds on the out-and-back course with challenging, uneven terrain. Canyon Lohnas, 12, of Frostburg, was second with a time of 7:16 and Brooks Mickey, 12, was third in 7:24.
Brayden Pennington, 12, placed fourth in 7:47 while Dakota Bierman, 11, rounded out the top five with a time of 7:48.
Marie Lewis, 10, was sixth overall and the first female to cross the finish line in the 12-and-under division. Elizabeth Lowe, 11, was two places and six seconds back in 7:55. Megan Lewis, 9, was third.
Jaron Hawkins, 26, of Frostburg, won the open 2-mile run in 12:32. Chris DeRosa, 18, also of Frostburg, placed second in 12:49 and Frankfort High School graduate Johnny Macklen, 17, was third in 13:03. Melanie Denton, 16, was the top female in the race and stopped the clock in 15:49.
Combined, the 1-mile run had 93 total finishers. The 2-mile run had 47 finishers, including 12 runners between the ages of 5 and 12.
The fourth event in the six-race series is July 14 at 6:30 p.m. at Keyser High School in New Creek, W.Va. The cost is $1 per runner. Call Joe Altobello at (304) 788-1889 for details.
