WESTERNPORT – The first four finishers of the 9th annual Lisa Wade Memorial 5K run in Westernport on Saturday reflected the natural evolution of a distance runner.
Dan DeWitt is a 2009 graduate of Lehigh University and, with a winning time of 15 minutes and 22 seconds, showed that he, too, is among the ranks of the Mid-Atlantic region’s best 21-year-olds. DeWitt was just seven seconds shy of tying course record-holder Jaron Hawkins’ time of 15:15, set last July.
Jose Orellana, 18, of Frederick, edged out Allegany High School standout Ian MacFawn for second placed. Orellana, who has contested a series of area races this summer in hopes of impressing Frostburg State University cross country coach Randy Lowe and become the Bobcats’ newest freshman harrier, was second overall in 16:57.
MacFawn, meanwhile, has run multiple sub-17-minute 3.1-mile races this summer which has served noticed that, as a junior this fall, he expects to contend for a state title. On Saturday, MacFawn, 16, of LaVale, was third overall in 16:58.
Dennis Mickey, of Ridgeley, W.Va., placed fourth by stopping the clock in 17:07. Mickey showed that while he’s past the prime of his marathoning life, the 44-year-old’s legs still have sufficient stamina to give the younger runners someone to shoot for. After all, Mickey did beat 168 others – of all ages – to the finish line.
In December 2008, outdoor enthusiast Jesse Shimrock met and trained with McHenry resident Jen Sober. Upon first impression, Shimrock declared Sober “the most legit chick I know.”
Any female participating in Saturday’s Lisa Wake Memorial 5K run probably felt the same way. Sober, 36, led all women to the finish line with a recent personal best time of 19:36 – an effort that Sober herself wasn’t even expecting.
Gwen Massey, 20, was second place among all women and 19th overall in 19:50. Frostburg State University incoming senior Christina Aumand, 20, was third in 20:40. FSU grad Jen Patton, 21, was fourth in 21:36 while Paula Bridges, 43, of Cumberland, won the women’s masters title in 22:32.
