Xander overtakes older sister; Reed, Lewis earn 1-mile victories

MOUNTAIN LAKE PARK — Xander Shoemake doesn’t have to worry about who pick out go after in a crowd of runners. All he looks for is the familiar bouncing of brown hair attached to his older sister’s head.
“Usually, I beat her,”?said the 6-year-old Ridgeley, W.Va. resident, of his sister, Lace, while still in the final quarter-mile of a 1-mile run at Broadford Lake Recreation Area.
And he did. Using powerful arm movements that helped propel him up the final hill to the finish line along with a short by steady stride, Xander finished 10th overall in the 12-and-under division of the Queen City Striders summer running series for children. Xander’s time of 8 minutes, 48 seconds was 20 seconds ahead of Lace, who exclaimed satisfaction about being in front of her little brother at the midway point. Lace finished 12th in 9:08.
Joel Reed, 12, won the division title with a time of 6:15. Marie Lewis bested all the female competition with a time of 7:12, good for second in the division and sixth overall in the 1-mile run. It was Marie's first time finishing inside the top 10.

Hawkins, of Frostburg, eventually overtook Lowe to win the race, No. 5 of the Queen City Junior Striders six-race summer cross country series.Hawkins finished in 12:10, about four seconds ahead of Lowe, 38, of Frostburg, who finished in 12:14.
The final run is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 11 at Dan's Mountain State Park near Lonaconing.
