Bel Air Elementary School recently implemented a Mileage Club for third, fourth and fifth grade students in an effort to promote walking and running for healthy living.  Spearheaded by the school’s PTO, teachers and interns, this club also gives students who may not always enjoy participating in organized team sports an alternative to move and have fun during recess.

Under the supervision of a teacher, parent volunteer, or student intern, students walk or run around the track and earn “mileage sticks” for each lap completed - five sticks is equivalent to one mile.  Students are charged with keeping a record of their laps each day, and when a total of five miles has been completed, students earn a necklace chain with a colorful foot token.  Special tokens are awarded at each 25 mile mark, and at the end of the school year, certificates will be given to all participants and trophies to top award winners in each grade.

In addition, Mileage Club updates are announced daily by fifth grade student, Kobe Bosley, who acts as Bel Air’s sports reporter.  To date, students have clocked more than 800 miles, and some students have run or walked more than 30 miles individually.

Depending on the continued success of this new program, Bel Air’s primary grades will be included in the program next year.  According to fifth grade teacher, Laurie Ferguson, “By helping students realize the value of fitness in their lives now, they are more likely to maintain a healthy lifestyle later.  Bel Air students are making strides towards lifelong fitness.”
