Griffith, 40, of Short Gap, W.Va., finished third in the multiple lap trail race in which teams relay run (or solo) during a 12-hour time period. Each team's final placing is determined by the number of laps around the 6.5-mile loop. The race started at 7 a.m. and each runner's final lap was started before 7 p.m.

Joe McQuade, of Cumberland, finished fourth overall and Mowery, of Ellerslie, placed fifth.

Griffith updated friends and family through Facebook during stops in random breaks.

"Six miles (39 miles) in just under 7 hours," Griffith wrote near the 2 p.m. mark. "Taking a break, may be done. Legs are shot and it's hot. If I feel better, I'll try to do one more loop. MJ (wife Mary Jane Baniak) is on her sixth now."

Two hours later, Griffith had another update.
"Ran Mary Jane's seventh lap with her," he said. "She just headed out for one more! I am gassed. She's kicking my (expletive)!"

Baniak finished second overall. Kari Brown, of Bedford County, Pa., and a Cresaptown Elementary School teacher, was fifth in the women's division. Griffith said she and husband Rande brown "left early, or would have both been first or second."

Complete results will be posted as soon as they become available.
