CRESAPTOWN, May 24 -- Brayden Brown had quite a bit of incentive to run fast on Monday.
He was the top returning runner at Cresaptown Elementary School. The entire student body was cheering him on. And fellow fifth-grader Kaylee Buckbee was right on his heels.
Brown handled the pressure quite well and finished the 4.5-loop flat cross country course in 6 minutes, 34.4 seconds. Buckbee, who's had quite a competitive spring season while working her way back from injury, was second overall and the first female with a time of 6:41.5.
Both runners' times are an improvement from their 2009 performances. Last year, Brown ran in 7:00. Buckbee finished in 7:04.
The field of 74 finishers -- a 15.5 percent increase of qualifiers from last year to this year -- were divided into two heats, first through third grade and then fourth and fifth grade. That didn't stop two younger runners, second-grader Christian Groves and third-grader Bobby Halle, take two of the top five spots overall.
Groves finished 11th in 2009 in a time of 8:12. On Monday, Groves won the lower division heat in 7:37.7, an improvement of more than 35 seconds. Steven allen, grade four, finished third overall. Groves took fourth and Halle was second in his heat with a time of 7:43.8 -- good for fifth in the field. Nick Crawford (7:48.1) edged Collin Cook (7:49.5) for fourth in the second heat.
