Run, walk to benefit Greenway Avenue Stadium renovations
Kevin Spradlin
CUMBERLAND - Mark Manges had a moment of internal conflict last week after reading Mike Calhoun¹s comments regarding the renovation of Greenway Avenue Stadium.
Manges, a former All-American quarterback whose team went 34-5 over his four-year career at Fort Hill High School, freely opposes most anything if it comes from an Allegany High School affiliate. But the message conveyed by Calhoun, Allegany principal, was that no renovation should begin until the project can be done in its entirety.
"I agree with Mike Calhoun on that," Manges said. "I didn¹t think I¹d ever say that (but) it shouldn¹t be done until it¹s done the way it should be done. Don¹t do it half-way. Don't cut anything. Just be patient. First off, let's rally the people. Let¹s try to get behind this all the way and let¹s try to get this right."
Manges can get away with that level of honesty - he and Calhoun are friends. And the cause around which he, Calhoun and others want the community to rally is a single one - save The Stadium.
So Manges, with a new knee, and his wife, Janie, and mom, Norma, will be one
of at least 138 runners and walkers who participate on Saturday in the first Cumberland City Mini-Marathon at The Stadium. Read More
Allegany standout Ian MacFawn and Fort Hill standout Amanda Twigg led the inaugural field of approximately 400 runners and walkers at Saturday’s Cumberland City Mini-Marathon.
MacFawn’s time of 15 minutes and 35 seconds led the way for the 165 finishers in the 2.62 mile distance. A sophomore member of the Camper track and field team, MacFawn finished 7 seconds ahead of Fort Hill assistant track and field coach David Mertz, a participant in last Monday’s Boston Marathon.
Veteran runner Tony Yurko earned a solid third place finish with a time of 15 minutes and 51 seconds over the rolling course that started at Greenway Avenue Stadium, continued through Constitution Park with a return finish on the 50 yard line in the stadium.
Twigg, last year’s 1600 and 800 meter state champion in Maryland 1A, had a winning time of 17 minutes and 10 seconds in the women’s division and good for 10th place overall.
Less than one week after her 3rd place showing in the women’s division of the Mountain Maryland Marathon, Amy Rowan finished 2nd in a time of 18 minutes and 3 seconds. Veteran local runner Paula Bridges once again proved she is still very competitive as she placed 3rd overall for the women in a time of 19 minutes and 40 seconds.
The youngest participant who finished the run was 3 year old Charlotte Taylor and the oldest participant was 59 year old Bill Dudley.
In the untimed walk, Glenda Brady, Kathy Taylor and Bethany Yurko led the women. Paul Appel, Cody Miller and Vincent Esposito were the first three finishers for the men. The youngest registered participant in the walk was one year old Owen Rice and the oldest registered participant was Norma Manges.
Awards for the Allegany/Fort Hill feeder school with the most participants and the high school with the most participants will be given once the final numbers are tabulated.
All proceeds from the Cumberland City Mini-Marathon benefit the renovation of Greenway Avenue Stadium.
