WHEELING, W.Va, Aug. 6 – Ron Green had just one question after 223 runners and walkers completed the Green Mile in the Heritage Port district in downtown Wheeling, W.Va.
“What do you think about that mile,” Green asked as the post-race pizza line opened for business. “Wasn’t that a lot of fun?”

The answer was a resounding “Yes,” with a “wahoo!” scattered throughout the crowd waiting for their slice of Domino’s pizza while taking a seat on the steps overlooking the Ohio River.

Goals were achieved, emotions were elated and victory belonged to more than just the top man and woman Friday night at the footrace.

Logan Wojcik, a Wheeling Central grad who plans to study communications beginning this fall at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, was the first to cross the finish line in 4 minutes, 35.1 seconds.
Marathoner Mike Aldrink, 33, of Powell, Ohio, was second in 4:40 and Edward Tullius, 36, of Moundsville, W.Va., rounded out the top three runners in 4:50.2 and the only three who finished under the 5-minute barrier.

Wheeling Central coach Heather Wayt, 36, broke up the men’s dominance by proving dominant herself. She stopped the clocked in 5:30.1 – well ahead of Diane McCracken, 53, of Rayland, Ohio. In fact, McCracken had another Wayt to contend with.
Both of Heather’s 9-year-old twin daughters competed in the race. McCracken finished in 6:32.6, just one spot ahead of Ireland Wayt. Wearing the custom loose-fitting running shorts, Ireland said she prefers the distance events while her sister, Kenadee – attired in black spandex shorts – prefers the sprints. Kenadee clocked a 6:59.2.

Heather, Ireland and Kanadee finished first, third and fifth, respectively, among 90 female finishers in the run and walk. All three planned to run the Debbie Green Memorial 5K run 24 hours later.

Seven of the top 10 females were 18 or under, and six of those seven are 13-and-under. Morgan  Glass, 11, of Wheeling, finished just ahead of Kenadee in 6:45.1. while 15-year-olds Meghan Heran (7:29.3) and Ashley Grove (7:29.7) ran side by side much of the race. Sydnie Stewart, 13, also of Wheeling, finished in 7:41.2.
