BOONSBORO, Oct. 3 -- A day that opened as a great day for running - approximately 50 degrees at daybreak with no wind - turned into opportunity for Liberty junior Samantha McElroy.

McElroy dashed Greencastle senior Charmayne McFadden's hopes for an upset by eeking out a win in the girls' varsity small school division on Saturday morning in the Frank Keyser Invitational at Boonsboro High School. McElroy, who led the Lions to the team title, covered the 5,000-meter course in 19 minutes and 16.3 seconds. McFadden was second in 19:17.1.

Liberty teammate Casey Sullivan, just a sophomore, was third in 19:18.2 and fellow Lion Michele Lambert was fifth overall as Liberty outdistanced runner-up Walkersville in the team standings, 53 points to 75 points. Smithsburg placed third with 94 points and Southern Garrett, a dark horse leading up to last year's Class 1A West Region championship, placed fourth with 98 points. Holton Arms, led by the fourth-place finish of junior Kathryn Scully's 19:20.2.

Walkersville placed its five scoring runners in the top 11 spots to cruise to the team title with 35 points in the boys' varsity small school division.

Boonsboro junior Evan Moser won the individual title on his home course in 16:06.8, a 5:22 pace, and outdistanced fellow Washington County harrier Evan Hardy of Williamsport (2nd, 16:29.5). Rockville's Nathan Austin placed third in 16:37.8. before Walkersville's first runner, sophomore Jacob Myers, was fourth in 16:50.2. But the Frederick County school took three of the next four spots - Christian Blackner, Edward Hong and Zachary Zeller in sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively - to seal the win. Sophomore Neil Rasband rounded out the victors' scorers by placing 11th in 17:13.2.

In the girls' varsity large school division, Thomas Johnson senior Stephanie Bryan had what amounted for her as an "off" day. Her third -place finish in 18:34.1 - behind Clarksburg freshman Abigail Daley (18:09.3) and Abby Spitler (Gaithersburg, 18:22.8) did little to change the team standings, however. Bryan was the first of four consecutive Thomas Johnson runners to cross the finish line within a 39-second span.

Junior Savanna Plombon followed Bryan for fourth in 18:41.6 and Kristen Luttrell was fifth in 19:03.9 while junior Annie Powell placed sixth in 19:13.1. The Patriots' final top-five runner, senior Kelsey Igo, was 12th overall in 19:51.9.

Thomas Johnson won the team title with 30 points. North Hagerstown was second with 109 points and Urbana (120) edged Chesapeake (123) for third place.

Smithsburg senior David Wilson followed up his Bull Run Invitational effort - in which he posted the fastest time of the day by any runner, any class - with a 15:19.7, good for first in the boys' varsity large school division. The Leopard averaged 5:07 per mile but his win had little impact on the team standings.

Chesapeake senior Will Neal was second in 15:32.3 and Linganore sophomore Braden Bruning was third in 15:46.2. Only two other runners - Urbana's Jimmy Miller (15:47.9) and Gaithersburg's Brendon Stepek (15:57.5) cracked the sub-16:00 barrier.

Team champion South Lakes placed its first runner in the No. 9 spot - junior Nick Guarnaccia (16:10.3) but took places 10, 12, 18 and 22 to edge Richard Montgomery, 71 points to 87 points, for the win.
