Selin and Sober Repeat Victories in Garrett Open

Oakland, MD - The weather was perfect for the Garrett Open / Recovery Race held Saturday at Herrington Manor State Park.The race was organized by Garrett Trails and Garrett County Health Department*s Center for Behavioral Health promote the use of trails throughout the county and also recognize National Addictions Recovery Month.
Sixty-one runners participated in the 6 kilometer course over established trails
through forest glens, mountain meadows and past the park lake.  Kari Selin of Morgantown kept a 7:38 pace to lead all runners over the
rolling course.  Selin took the lead at the 3.5 mile mark when the lead runner missed a turn.Jen Sober of McHenry led all women with a blistering 7:44 pace finishing a full 5 minutes ahead of the second place overall female Andie Devens also of McHenry.

The Southern High boys cross country team was well represented with Jasper Tasker finishing third and placing a total of 6 runners in the top 11 spots.
Steve Green and Robin Storey led the strong masters field with times of 24:51 and 31:32 respectively.

In addition to the 6 kilometer run a 1 mile walk was held.  Carsyn and Calyb King crossed the finish line with a time of 10:58 and 10:59 to lead the 26 walk participants.

One of the goals of the GO/RR is to expose the public to the expanding trail system in Garrett County.  Many participants commented on the
beauty of the trail and a few observed deer and wild turkeys while completing the course.  One participant, Steve Bell of Keyser enjoyed
the course so much that he ran it two additional times in preparation for the upcoming Savage Man Triathlon.

A second goal of the GO/RR is to recognize those persons who are in recovery from an addiction.  September is National Recovery Month and
the Garrett County Steps committee co-hosted the event to raise awareness of the resources available locally to assist persons
struggling with addictions. Steve Green, the president of Garrett Trails thanked the runners for
coming out to the event and encouraged the public to take advantage of the many trails throughout Garrett County.

He also thanked the sponsors including:, ASI at Garrett College, ASCI, Garrett County Center for Behavioral Health, Railey Realty, Gosnell Inc. Team One, High Mountain Sports and Claire Shockley (Voiceover Actor).  The race was hosted by Saucony Shoes represented by Jen Sober.  All participants received a
gear bag from Saucony in addition to a commemorative T-shirt.  Persons interested hiking, biking, running or cross country skiing the many
