Running a 5-kilometer race burns about 400 calories for the average runner. So about 30,000 calories were expended Thursday morning at Hagerstown Community College by the more than 700 competitors in the eighth annual HCC Turkey Trot.
Burning those calories faster than everyone else was Hagerstown resident Doug Oates, who won in a personal record best time of 15:52. Oates pulled away from Naseem Haje during the final sprint around the indoor track at the college for a six-second win.
Haje, a 2009 Williamsport graduate and collegiate runner for King College (Tennessee), paced the two throughout the race with an opening pair of 5:02 miles. Fresh off an All-American 15th place finish at the NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) National Championships, Haje was running his first fast workout in two weeks.
Oates was fresh off a 10-hour overnight shift for the Hagerstown City Police Department. The 2008 Turkey Trot runner-up said, “At the top of the switchback on the hill before the finish, I knew it was just us two and that I had a chance to win the race and set a personal record.” His previous PR of 15:58 was set seven years ago, and Doug figured that number would likely stand as his best ever.
Oates can load up on Thanksgiving turkey and fixings in preparation for his next race on Saturday in Montgomery County called “The Turkey Burn-off 10-Miler.” Perfect bookends for a week of gastronomic excess!
Winning the women’s race was Catoctin High School and Slippery Rock University graduate Jaime Wright, who covered the two-loop course in 18:24. The NCAA Division II All-American claimed the victor’s turkey prize for the 3rd consecutive year. “I sensed I was in the lead and paced off the men around me to just run a fast fun workout,” said Wright.
Among group winners were: 19 and under – Haje and Taryn Shank, 20 to 29 – Angie Rhoderick McKinley and Dustin Adams, 30-39 – Bret Mower and Dani Mason, 40-49 – Tim Schuler and Kay Harrison, 50-59 – Mike Meadows and Karen Abbamonte, 60-69 – Matt McLaughlin and Marlys Palmer, 70-79 – Larry Wink and Dolores Monninger.
Williamsport High School won the Jeff Scuffins Cup for the school with the most participants.
The race was a benefit for the HCC track and cross country teams and the women’s softball team. Collections of canned goods also benefited the Washington County Food Resources, Inc.
