3rd Catch Me If You Can offers unique racing experience for local runners
CUMBERLAND The 3rd Catch Me If You Can 5-mile and 10-mile trail races were contested on Saturday morning at Rocky Gap State Park and the Lakeside Loop trail. Most local races benefit a local charity, and this race is no exception as proceeds go to the Allegany County Habitat for Humanity.
The big difference in this race is that female runners receive a four-minute head start before the male runners are allowed to take off and give chase.
The idea is to determine a true champion at the 5-mile and 10-mile distances around the technically challenging single-track trail circling Rocky Gap’s Lake Habeeb and was developed by 2010-2011 race co-directors Shauna McQuade and Connie Milligan.
Temperatures on Saturday morning were a cool 40 degrees but that didn’t stop nearly 100 runners from coming out to test their trail running prowess. For the first time in the race’s three year history, men made up the four-minute head start and prevailed over both race distances.
In the 5-mile race, Dennis Mickey, 47, of Ridgeley, beat everyone to the finish line and completed the loop in 37:31 (33:31 with the head start removed). This finish was 25 seconds faster than Mickey’s 2011 second-place finish. Read More
Catoctin Youth Association Runners Excel in the 10th Annual Frederick Half-Marathon
Results
Long time youth runners Lillie Perella of Thurmont MD., and Leigh Rankin of Frederick MD., set personal best finish times at the 10th Annual Frederick Half-Marathon this past Sunday, May 6, 2012. Running in the foggy, misty weather certainly seemed to pay dividends for both girls as they bested their previous half-marathon result - albeit on the trails - by well over 24 minutes each, respectively.
Lillie Perella, the daughter of Christine and Charles Perella, ran her third half-marathon and finished in 3rd place in her age group (19 & Under) in a time of 1:47.58. She finished in 531st place.
Leigh Rankin, the daughter of Connie and Glenn Rankin, finished her second half-marathon, in 8th place in her age group (19 & Under) in a time of 1:53.22. She finished in 876th place.
There were a total of 3,972 finishers in the half marathon.
Both runners compete in local and regional trail races throughout Pennsylvania and Maryland, and have been active in youth track and field programs in Frederick County for several years, specifically with the Catoctin Youth Association in Thurmont, MD. Lillie is a seventh grader at Thurmont Middle School and Leigh is an eighth grader at New Market Middle School in New Market, MD.

Boonsboro girls, Smithsburg boys rule 1A West

By ANDREW MASON
FROSTBURG, Md. — The Boonsboro girls and Smithsburg boys track and field teams began this spring on quests for Maryland Class 1A state titles.
They’re both still headed in the right direction as they’ll go to the state meet in Baltimore next week as West region champions. They won those titles Friday at Mountain Ridge High School
The Boonsboro girls, the defending state champions, dominated Friday, winning seven of the 18 events and racking up 143.5 points. Mountain Ridge finished a distant second (95) in the 12-team field, while Manchester Valley was third (88.5).
“It’s great to win, but the real goal was to get people qualified for states,” Boonsboro coach Becky Walter said. “The girls have been training for this all year, and the hard work’s paying off.”
The Smithsburg boys made a late charge to get past Brunswick 99-89, while Boonsboro finished third (83).
Our boys did a really nice job of going out there and earning those points,” Smithsburg coach T.J. Hood said. “We only won four events, but that’s a theme at Smithsburg. The kids who win get the accolades, but it’s the kids who get a third-place here and a fifth-place there that add up to a team title.”
The Smithsburg boys won the 4x100 (45.37) and 4x200 (1:31.71) and got victories from Zane Gardenhour in the long jump (20-3 1/2) and Nick Porter in the pole vault (11-6). Read More

2012 Jack Griffin Mid-Atlantic Prep Track & Field Classic
Meets Website
Coaches,
I want to wish all of you the best of luck as Championship season is upon us. This weekend is the Maryland and Pennsylvania state meets. Next weekend is the Virginia state meet. Delaware and West Virginia just completed their states. With the end of the season comes post season meets. These would include New Balance Nationals, Junior Olympics, Youth Nationals, etc. Another meet to look at is the 2012 Jack Griffin Mid-Atlantic Prep Track & Field Classic in Hagerstown, Md. The meet is June 2 and has had some top talent the 1st 2 years.
Last year, Michael Wegner broke a 32 yr old national record for boys age 14 in the 5000 meter run. Jonathan Russell of Va. won the 400 in 48.53 and then represented the USA at the World Junior Championships in Lille , France in the 400 meter hurdles. Dante Price , WV AAA state champion, won the 100 and 200 and will now be representing the NSSF at the Carribean Scholastic Invitational June 1-2. The 800 was won by Maria Seykora of Notre Dame Academy in Pa as her 3 teammates also finished well. The team went on to run 9:10 at New Balance Nationals.
In 2010, Jermaine Brown of NY won the 200 and then he won the 200 at New Balance Nationals. 2 males qualified for USATF Junior Nationals in the Hammer Throw. Emily Kianka of NJ was the #3 Indoor High Jumper in the USA for girls.
The early deadline for the meet is Sunday May 27. This years meet is looking to be great. We already have schools from PA, DC ,DE and MD signed up. This is not a school meet. This is a USATF meet so athletes participate unattached or as a track club. School uniforms can not be worn. There are teams entered in the 800 and 1600 sprint medleys, 4x100,4x200 and 4x400. The meet follows a strict time schedule.
This is a chance for your athletes to run different events than usual, such as, 2000 steeplechase, 5000, 400 hurdles, SMRs, Javelin, Decathlon/Heptathlon. This is good for colleges to see so that athletes may get better scholarships. The meet serves as a Meet of Champions for Mryland and surrounding states. This is a chance for public and private schools to race each other as well as state versus state competition. This is also a chance for athletes 1 last chance to compete since not all athletes can run at New Balance Nationals. Qualifying standards are pretty easy. An athlete that doesnt run well in their last meet can now have a meet to end the season on a good note. Athletes not qualifying for the state meet can now use this as their state meet.
