WILLIAMSTOWN - The fourth annual Ryan Jobes Spring Special inside the Jack Jones Track and Field Complex on Saturday witnessed some record-setting performances by the girls and a finish to remember in the boys field.
While the champion Hurricane girls received a meet record in the 400 by junior Josie Crouch (59.89) and a pair of new standards by the Redskins in the 4 by 400 (4:20.25) and 4 by 800 (9:59.95) meter relays, host Williamstown head coach Doak Markley's boys team tallied 81.5 points to edge runner-up University (81) and a tough luck third place finish by Ritchie County (80).
"We improved across the board and we got a little something here and there," Markley said. "You get something here and there and then we try to stay healthy and get better every week and a lot of the kids' performances they've gone up since Tuesday so we'll just keep trying."
Williamstown used a two-three finish in the shot put from Cody Matheny and Matt Kiger, who was runner-up in the discus, along with placing efforts in several other events to secure the title.
The 'Jacket relay teams captured both the shuttle hurdles in 1:05.74 (Sean Martin, Dylan McNutt, Bobby Stanley, Micah Wood) and the 4 by 200 in 1:38.89 (Austin Williams, Michael Shaw, Adam Kerns, Wood).Read More

The Thomas Johnson boys track and field team hopes to hang another state championship banner in the school's gymnasium later this year.
TJ's performance as host of Saturday's Patriot Invitational was a step in the right direction.
Up against some of the top teams in the state on the public and private school levels, the Patriots rolled past runner-up Chesapeake (Anne Arundel County), 143.5-77, to win the boys title in the second annual event. Mount Hebron edged Middletown for third place, 69-68, and Francis Scott Key got fifth (50.5).
River Hill won the girls team championship, holding off the Patriots, 116-103, with Chesapeake third (100), Linganore fourth (87) and Mount Hebron fifth (62). Middletown was sixth (49).
When TJ coach and meet director Nick Snyder set up this invitational two years ago, the intention was to have teams get an early look at what kind of competition they might face in May. Read More

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION -Jefferson boys track coach Craig Hunter wasn't expecting to see any record-breaking performances in Saturday's Jim Taylor Relays.
The Cougars gave him the unexpected, along with some of the expected.
Jefferson's boys set marks in the 800-meter sprint medley (1:38.61) and 4x110 shuttle hurdle (1:00.12) en route to a first-place finish.
"We were able to take down two records today, and I didn't think we would see that with the weather being the way it was," Hunter said.
The weather wasn't optimal as it drizzled, then rained on and off the entire meet. But that didn't stop the Cougar boys from winning their second meet of the season. Jefferson finished with 65.40 points, followed by James Wood, Va. (59.40), Hedgesville (54.40), Clarksburg (52.40) and Williamsport, Md. (49.40) rounding out the top five.
Other local finishers included Berkeley Springs and Musselman tied for ninth with 21.40 points, and Washington in 12th with 14.40 points.Read More

Kim Nutter/St. Joseph’s Hospital Classic
By JIM BUTTA
PARKERSBURG - Big Red junior Janey Hall knew there would be some pressure on her as she entered her second season of track and field at Parkersburg High School.
Following her double victory at the Kim Nutter/St. Joseph's Hospital Classic, that pressure doesn't seem to be bothering the multi-talented athlete.
"I really enjoy the fact that my teammates have so much faith in me," Hall explained following her victories in the 100 and 200 meter dashes. "We all practice very hard every day and it's good to see all that work pay off."
Hall's wins weren't quite enough, however, as Buckhannon Upshur captured the team title with a 142-109 decision over its host. Winfield, the defending Class AA champions, finished third with 87 points followed by Wheeling Park (85), John Marshall (64), Preston (42) and Parkersburg South (29).Read More
