Ato Modibo (Jr-High Point) was the star of the boys meet with three powerful golds in the 300 (35.7 -- second fastest ever in Maryland indoor, only 0.06 off the state record), 500 (1:07.4), and an amazing come from behind anchor of the 1600 Relay (3:30.9). The announcer clocked Modibo's anchor leg in 49 flat. Vanessa Jones (Sr-Sherwood) high jumped 5-8 for a new meet record and a tie for the state indoor record. She bested top seeded Michelle June (Sr-Meade), who got 5-6. Mechelle Lewis (Jr-Oxon Hill) set a new meet and state indoor record in the girls 55 with a time of 6.9 seconds, decisively beating a fast group of finalists. She also doubled in the 500 (1:17.7). Ola Sesay (Sr-Eleanor Roosevelt) won the girls 55 hurdles in meet record time of 8.0. Eleanor Roosevelt Girls sizzled in the 800 Relay in new meet and state indoor record time of 1:44.4 as runner-up Oxon Hill's 1:45.7 also topped the old record 1:45.84 by Eleanor Roosevelt in 1992. Girls: Damascus 48, Douglass-PG, 47, Thomas Johnson 42, Catonsville 40, Wilde Lake 39, Linganore 24, Duval 24, Centennial 14, North Hagerstown 14. Highlights The Boys Team championship went down to the final race with only one team over 30 points and six teams within 10 points of each other. Centennial had the lead with 34 points, but was shutout in the 1600 relay and Milford Mill surged to victory in the race and the championship with 38 points. Milford Mill did not seem to be in contention, but captured both the 800 and 1600 meter relays at the end of the evening. Milford Mill won the low scoring event with a team of only four boys: Derek Anderson, Derrick Stanfield, James Dixon, and Sean Galloway. In addition to the two relays, Stanfield, a sophomore, was second in the 300 meters and fifth in the 500 meters. Anderson, a junior, was second in the 55 meters. The Girls Team championship was also a nail biter but Damascus had an insurmountable 11 point lead to hold off the 1600 Relay victor Douglass-PG by one point. Top seeded Damascus suffered a setback early when its favored 3200 relay team was beaten by unseeded Catonsville in the opening race. But senior Kacey Childs won the high jump and contributed with junior Carlesha King to a 2-3 finish and 14 points in the 55 hurdles to put Damascus on top. Randallstown junior Jeff McKelvin single handedly put his team in contention by winning the high jump (6-5) and 55 hurdles (7.4). Wilde Lake senior Nyjla Littlejohn was the individual star of the girls meet by doubling in the 55 hurdles (8.56) and 300 (43.4) and placing third in the 55 (7.62) right after the hurdles. Third place Thomas Johnson got two individual golds from sophomore Lisa Lushbaugh, who passed two leaders on the turn in a powerful last lap in the 500 (1:20.8), and junior Jennifer Ford, who led all the way in the 1600 (5:18.4). Linganore boys won the 3200 relay convincingly in 8:34.7. Carver senior Bernard Williams doubled in the 55 (6.59) and 300 (37.2). Highlights Kathy Messner (Jr-Catoctin) came off a sick bed to set a new meet record in high jump at 5-7. That broke Messner's previous 5-6 tie with Tanya Hughes, now on the professional circuit. Messner almost missed the meet entirely when she came down with a mysterious rash and her doctor threatened a one-week home quarantine. Beth Santilli (Jr-River Hill) won four gold medals by sweeping the girls 800 (2:26.2), 1600 (5:13), and 3200 (11:51.7) and anchoring the winning 3200 relay (10:15.1). Derek Dye (Jr-Middletown) polished off an undefeated indoor season to win the boys high jump at 6-4. He was perfect through 6-4 to stave off top-seeded Gary Pinder (Sr-Easton). Dye put the pressure on Pinder at each height by making his first attempt cleanly. Pinder, whose unexpected miss at 5-10 gave Dye the lead, hurt his foot on his second miss at 6-4; he limped back for a courageous third try but missed. Pinder was jumping after finishing second in the 300 and sixth in the 55. The West region coaches were right: the Hagerstown JC track (200 meters rubberized), host of the West regional meet, is much faster than the slippery surfaces at the Baltimore Armory (200 meters, hardwood) and Wicomico Civic Center (176 meters, hardwood). All through the evening, West region athletes saw their times slip and finished behind lower seeded qualifiers from the Armory (Central region) or Wicomico (East). Kate MacFarlane (Sr-Hereford) won the inaugural girls pole vault at 9-6, automatically setting a meet record and also setting a new state indoor record because she was higher than the 4A winner the previous night. Teyarte Carter, precocious freshman from the new Long Reach High School, set a meet record 7.1 in the girls 55. Marcus Lynch (Sr-Western Tech) doubled in the boys 55 (6.61) and 300 (37.0), with the 300 mark only one hundredth of a second off the meet record. Chris Selmer (Sr-Glenelg) doubled in the boys 500 (1:10.4) and 800 (2:05.8).
