Youth Runners Compete for Top Harrier Honors in Regional Individual and Team Competition

Over 200 runners ages 7 to 18 from Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia took advantage of beautiful fall weather to compete on well-groomed but challenging cross country courses at the third annual Maryland Youth Cross Country Championships held at Ballenger Creek Park in Frederick, Maryland. Many of these youth runners were competing to qualify for the Cross Country Coaches National Youth Championships (CCCNYC) in Huntington, West Virginia or the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) National Cross Country Championships in Orlando, Florida. The meet was hosted by the Frederick-based Lightning Running Club (LRC)

In age-group team competition, LRC won each of the eight team races, scoring 20 points or less in each race. LRC also had age-group teams place third in three races (Bantam boys, Midget girls, and Midget boys). The Nittany Track Club (NTC) from State College, Pennsylvania placed second in each of the eight races and the Whippets from Stephens City, Virginia placed third in the girls’ Bantam race.

Individual age-group race champions were Alana Bradford (8:50) from the Ribbon Breakers (Stephens City, VA) and Ryan Russo from Hagerstown (8:08) in the Primary (ages 7/8) girls’ and boys’ 2,000 meter races; Brin Strouse (11:43) and Tamrat Snyder (11:57), both from the LRC, in the Bantam (ages 9/10) girls’ and boys’ 3,000 meter races; Gaby Urso (12:17) and Nathan Davis (11:18), also both from the LRC, in the Midget (ages 11/12) girls’ and boys’ 3,000 meter races; Meghan Lockett from Dickerson (15:01) and the Ribbon Breaker’s Jahlil Northover (14:54) in the boys’ and girls’ Youth (ages 13/14) 4,000 meter race; and Elizabeth Long (19:49) and Paul Long (21:33), both representing the Loudon county, Virginia NOVA Athletic Club (NOVA) in the boys’ and girls’ 5,000 meter races.

LRC youth runners completed an individual medal sweep in the Bantam girls’ race with Brin Strouse’s first place finish (11:43), Nandini Satsangi (12:27) finishing second, and Emily Baba (12:58) taking third. Top 10 individual finishers for each age-group race were:
