WOODSBORO — It was the first time this season that Carroll’s varsity cross country teams all ran against each other on the same course, and it didn’t take that much thinking afterward to know who made the first push toward the top of the county.

The Winters Mill boys came out on top in decisive fashion at the Mountain Run at Woodsboro Park Wednesday afternoon. For the girls, Century, led by sophomore Maura Linde, beat out Thomas Johnson to earn a first-place finish.

The WM boys earned 51 points and everyone knew after the first 10 runners had crossed the finish line, it was pretty much a given that the Falcons would come out on top.

However, they were out-gunned by South Carroll senior Jake Zamostny, who won in 16 minutes, 40.8 seconds, which was seven seconds shy of the track record.Read More

Brunswick's Sara Fisher, who was the overall winner at the Brunswick Invitational on Saturday, finished second in Wednesday's race behind individual winner Maura Linde, of Century, who crossed the finish line in 19 minutes, 13.2 seconds. Fisher's time was 19:15 and TJ's top runner was Stephanie Bryan, who finished third.

The top county boys finisher was Walkersville's Steven Keith, who finished eighth (17:38.7).
The Patriots girls were edged out by Century, 48-58. On Saturday, the TJ girls were edged by Towson in the Barnhart Invitational at Dulaney High School in Timonium. With a pair of close runner-up finishes under their belts, Lewis said better things should be ahead for the team. Read More

Mountain Run loses its luster with some top runners idle

By Andrew Mason (andrewm@herald-mail.com)
WOODSBORO, Md. - If you traveled to the Mountain Run cross country invitational Wednesday to see Washington County at its best, you wasted your time.

That's because several county runners weren't allowed to waste their efforts in the 19-school meet.

With even larger meets looming this Saturday, Williamsport rested its standout varsity boys team, while North Hagerstown's top boys and girls merely ran the JV races as training workouts.

"We have a huge meet (the South Carroll Invitational) on Saturday, and I don't want them to have dead legs for it," North coach Lindsay Zerance said. "Today was just a fun day." Read More
