Men’s masters mile highlights PVTC indoor meet
First outdoor meet set for May 16 at Falls Church High School

ARLINGTON, Va., Feb. 21 - Matthew Simonson and Anthony Belber took the top two spots in the men’s open mile race on Sunday on the indoor track of the Thomas Jefferson Community Center in Arlington, Va.

Simonson, 24, of Washington, D.C., took first place in 4 minutes, 56.5 seconds. Belber, 37, also of Washington, D.C., finished second in 4:59.3.

A pair of 42-year-old men duked it out for bragging rights and the top time in the men’s masters mile. Tadd Morris, visiting from Camp Hill, Pa., edged Malcolm Lester, of Washington, D.C., by a mere 1.7 seconds. Morris finished in 5:16.1 to Lester’s mark of 5:17.8.

Kevin Bell, 41, of Reston, Va., was third in 5:19 while McLean, Va., resident Ted Poulos, 48, was fourth in 5:20.

Hometown favorite Emily E. Blagg, 15, of Arlington, won the women’s mile in 5:46.7. She easily outdistanced runner-up Kristin Harman, 29, of Newport News, Va. Harman stopped the clock in 6:00.5.

In the children’s mile, 11-year-old Kevin Wegner of Columbia, Md., won in 5:54.2 - but it wasn’t easy. Page Lester, 10, of Washington, D.C., led all females to the finish line - and finished second overall - in 6:03.7, edging out Shannon Claire Lee, 11, from Gainesville, Va. (6:04.3).

Christopher Blagg, 13, of Arlington, was fourth in 6:17.7 and Roy Melvin, 12, of Upper Marlboro, Md., was fifth in 6:18.4, just ahead of the third-place female Kayla Tucker, 12, of Oxon Hill, Md., who finished in 6:19.6.

This meet was the final in a series of annual winter indoor track meets at the community center. The Potomac Valley Track Club’s outdoor season begins May 16 at Falls Church High School.

Entry fees are only $5 for children and $8 for adults. The fee covers every event the athlete intends to run in the meet. For more information, visit www.pvtc.org.
