LONACONING, Md., Jan. 12 -- Joe Altobello should be satisfied. In fact, the veteran Keyser (W.Va.) High School cross country coach should be quite happy.
Altobello's Maple Festival 5K was selected Tuesday by the Queen City Striders' board of directors as one of eight Striders Circuit Races for the 2010 calendar. Half the schedule discussed by Club President George Nolan, Secretary Randy Lowe and Treasurer Tommy Chandler - and nearly a dozen other stakeholders - was merely procedural. Traditional - and popular - events such as the Snowflake Chase 5-miler, the Moonshine Classic 10K and the Great Allegany Run 15K each made the list, as did a yet-to-be-named 1-mile race (more on that below).
A total of 13 race directors applied for four available spots. Two spots went to races that didn't apply - including one that didn't exist until Tuesday night. Race director Norm DeRosa was rewarded for his volunteer work with the club by having the June 5 race, contested in memory of his daughter, the late Katie DeRosa, at New Germany State Park. DeRosa had not applied for a Circuit race this year.
A 1-mile race in October - but moved to December in 2009 then canceled due to bad weather - was taken off the list. Instead, incoming board officer Jeremy Rice suggested a 1-mile race on June 25 in Grantsville. Rice said he'd talked with Grantsville Mayor Paul Edwards, who seemed excited about the idea. Most board members indicated the event wouldn't take away from the hugely popular Iron Furnace 5K in Lonaconing, scheduled for the very next day.
Nolan also rewarded race director Crystal Yoder, of Strides for Health and Fitness scheduled for Aug. 14. Nolan said Yoder "does a lot for her race" and attendance has steadily grown in its first few years.
Circuit races are chosen for two main reasons, board members said. Lowe said the club tries to spread the performance-based scoring system around the area and from end to end each calendar year. Other times, the series is an attempt to help an event that otherwise has difficulty attracting runners.
Among the races rejected for the series in 2010 include the first-year Catch Me If You Can 5- and 10-mile at Rocky Gap State Park. Race directors Shauna McQuade and Connie Milligan's unique format - women start first, and men start a few minutes later in an attempt to catch them - was talked about as difficult to score. In addition, its status as a first-year year was a setback.
Chandler questioned whether points would be awarded for the 5- or 10-mile distances. The consensus was to let the inaugural race, scheduled for May 1, play out and reconsider the event in 2011.
Another race not selected was the Salem Challenge 5K cross country at at Maryland Salem Children's Trust in eastern Garrett County - 2010 will be its second year. Nolan noted that race director Tom Ruckert's well-designed course is "tough", but Hampshire High School volunteer coach Robert Hawk didn't mind last July.
"It's a good one," Hawk said. "I enjoyed it."
Said Chandler: "I timed it and I didn't even want to walk up the hill."
Board member Jeremy Rice - another incoming officer starting Feb. 1 - suggested scheduling Circuit series races by quarters of the year. Partially for that reason, the second-year Cumberland City Mini-Marathon at Greenway Avenue Stadium - a fundraiser for the host location - was rejected.
Still, the end result was 2 series races on consecutive days and four of the eight between June 5 and Aug. 14.
Board members also discussed expanding the series to 10 races in 2011, up from its current eight-race level. There also was talk of changing the way the series is scored but no decision was reached for any particular change.
