MCHENRY, Md., May 17 -- Former Northern Garrett High School standout Ryan Bowser and Allegany High School graduate Anna Dusenberry captured Race Up The Face victories on Monday at the Wisp Resort.
The 400-meter race featured a 124-meter ascent up The Face, a black diamond ski trail. Race co-coordinator and Garrett Trails organization volunteer Bob Stephens said the incline was approximately a 31 percent gradient.
"It was pretty tough," said Dusenberry, 20. "I didn't really know what to expect going into it. My brother (Sam) wanted to do it" and asked his older sister to come along.
The University of Pennsylvania student recently completed her sophomore year at the Philadelphia campus. Her high school mile best was just under 6 minutes. Her pace on Monday wasn't nearly as fast.
Monday's time and pace "was not typical" of her capabilities, Dusenberry said. "I'm definitely better than the pace that I did up that hill."
Dusenberry's official 1/4-mile time was 4 minutes and 38 seconds. Bowser finished in 3:36, which Stephens called an "unbelievable" time.
"Pretty impressive," Stephens said of all 29 runners' efforts.
The first-year race was held despite pouring rains all day long and in conjunction with the 8th annual Taste of Garrett County.
"Well, for a terrible night, we had 29 runners," Stephens said. "That was actually a little better than what we thought we would have. We got a lot of good comments from people."
One comment served as the field's consensus - but Stephens wasn't sure if it was a good thing or a bad thing.
"People said they were in more pain than they'd ever been in."
