DEEP CREEK LAKE, Md., Jan. 16 -- Frostburg resident Dan DeWitt came out of winter hibernation long enough to secure a victory in the annual Uno's Snowflake Chase 5-miler at Deep Creek Lake.
DeWitt, 22, bested 90 other runners to the finish line with a time of 27 minutes and 7 seconds - good for a pace of 5:26 per mile. Fellow Mountain City resident Jeremy Rice, 27, was second in 29:58 and Ridgeley, W.Va., resident Dennis Mickey took third overall in 30:05.
"I had a good day," DeWitt said. "I wasn't really sure what to expect. I was good to get out after being cooped up for a couple weeks."
Snow and ice has covered Maryland's mountainsides since before Christmas. It was DeWitt's first race since Thanksgiving Day and only the second since he debuted at the marathon distance in Chicago.
Mickey, 44, edged Dexter Blank, 44, of Uniontown, Pa., for the top spot among masters runners. Blank was fourth overall in 30:07 while Woody Snoberger, 25, of Ridgeley, W.Va., rounded out the top five with a time of 30:47.
Heather Parks, 34, of Bruceton Mills, W.Va., was sixth overall and the top female runner on the day. She finished in 31:53, nearly two minutes ahead of her closest female competitor. Shannon Kovack, 24, of Connelsville, Pa., was second in the women's standings in 33:35. Bobbi Moose, 40, of Leesburg, Va., was third overall and the top masters female with a time of 37:45.
